"5 Things" you should know about campus gender-based violence

Health, Safety, and Well-being
February 9, 2015 Kevin Kruger NASPA

Updated Information 2016: Build a Culture of Respect at your institution and improve your campus’ sexual violence prevention and response strategies by joining us for our 2017 NASPA Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Conference, where student affairs practitioners will receive the tools they need to effectively address – and put an end to – sexual violence on today’s college campuses.

I am pleased to share with you the most recent edition of NASPA’s Research and Policy Institute 5 Things Issue Brief Series, titled “Five Things Student Affairs Practitioners Should Know about Campus Gender-Based Violence.” Authored by Nancy Chi Cantalupo, associate vice president for equity, inclusion, and violence prevention with NASPA, this issue brief offers a resource for student affairs leaders to not only comply with legal and regulatory mandates related to Title IX and the Clery Act, but to also achieve a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.

Student affairs leaders are on the front lines of developing and implementing policy and resources in response to recent legal and regulatory changes. I hope this publication will help operationalize the scope and complexity of legal issues surrounding campus gender-based violence and enable you to identify a set of actions your campus community can take to be proactive and preventive.

This 5 Things Issue Brief is provided as a NASPA member benefit. Once you click to download the document, you will be prompted to enter your login credentials. After you log in, the report will be accessible to you.

This is a critical resource for student affairs professionals seeking to improve the sexual violence prevention and response strategies at their institution. The brief includes specific, easy-to-digest guidelines, complete with a list of key terms related to gender-based violence and its implications on campus policies and compliance issues, such as the Clery Act, Title IX, climate survey, and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

I also would like to acknowledge the NASPA Foundation for their continued sponsorship of the 5 Things Issue Brief Series. This partnership is just one example of how gifts to the NASPA Foundation ensure the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession and help answer the challenges we face as educators. I am very pleased that the NASPA Foundation and the NASPA Research and Policy Institute collaborate in support of this important publication series.

I hope you find this new publication from NASPA valuable, and I appreciate your continued support.
