#SATakeSpace - Supporting Yourself and Supporting Others

November 10, 2016 Kevin Kruger NASPA

Yesterday, I authored an Inside HigherEd op-ed in which I asked the question, “How Do We Move Forward?” to address the uneasiness and uncertainty undoubtedly caused by the outcome of the recent election. While I don’t have all of the answers to that question, I do know that, in true student affairs form, it is likely that most of our members jumped right into their work helping others yesterday. This is the job of a student affairs professional, however the need for us to practice self-care and process our own reactions is equally as important.

Therefore, we are creating #SATakeSpace Dialogue Groups where the student affairs community can come together to intentionally address feelings, experiences, and reactions to the election. These hour-long virtual meetings, powered through Zoom, will be capped at 75 individuals each. We encourage you to have a webcam available for this experience, and please note that Zoom has apps for both Apple and Android as well.

If you are interested in participating, please register for only one of the sessions, as capacity is limited. Please also feel free to share this information with your colleagues, as this space is for the entire profession.

To register, please click on one of the links below:

Monday: 4pm-5pm EST

Tuesday: 7pm-8pm EST

Wednesday: 12pm-1pm EST

Thursday: 2pm-3pm EST

Friday: 10am-11am EST

We also encourage you to use the hashtag #SATakeSpace to post articles, blogs, and resources on social media, as well as ideas and examples for how you are processing the election with your students and colleagues. We will be aggregating this information on our NASPA Social Justice Signature Initiatives page. NASPA will also be creating more of these virtual spaces in the upcoming months, and if you are interested in helping with this initiative, please contact Nathan Victoria at [email protected].

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shared yesterday, “our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part to build that better, stronger, fairer America we seek.” This is our time to come together to make sure we hold ourselves up to this responsibility.
