Becoming a Tobacco-Free Community College

Health, Safety, and Well-being
April 24, 2015

The number of tobacco-free campuses in the U.S. has tripled since 2010. Properly enacting and enforcing these policies is a best practice for reducing tobacco-related harm.

Implementing 100% tobacco-free policies improve health by:

  • Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. For many, campus is the location where they are most exposed to toxic tobacco smoke. Those with asthma, cardiovascular conditions, and other health issues are unnecessarily put in harm’s way.
  • Significantly reducing tobacco-related litter and waste. Nothing can ruin a beautiful campus tour like a pile of cigarette butts by the main entrance. Plus, how much time is spent on cleaning up tobacco waste? (Not to mention the risk to employees handling hazardous byproducts.)
  • Helping people quit. Most tobacco users would like to quit. Tobacco-free policies help them do so – and stay quit.
  • De-normalizing tobacco use. Smoking became popular in part because the industry was so successful in creating the illusion that everyone smoked and it was normative behavior. Times of changed, and our campus norms should reflect that.

If your campus is considering becoming one of them, there are resources to help you.
