What's New with Professional Standards in NASPA IV-W?

NUFP Report:

There has been a lot of discussion recently regarding the exclusivity and inclusivity of student groups on campuses with regards to accepting members. My first instinct is that groups by being inclusive could be diluted, as in, if groups were open to all, there is a sense of loss of purpose in the group. Given that the system as is praises involvement on campus, with truly inclusive groups open to all, anyone could put anything on their resume to look better. I believe there could be a way to increase transparency of admissions processes without going to extreme and keeping a genuine interest in the groups mission. There's definitely a difference between being technically exclusive vs. having an exclusive and harmful culture, and perhaps there could be ways to properly scrutinize "exclusive" groups and check that the exclusivity is needed and isn't causing lots of harm, monitoring from afar but not micromanaging. A interesting idea to think about with these discussions: the effects of new inclusion rules for cultural and other minority-based groups.

Community College Report:

As the academic year winds to a close and we prepare for next year, there are lots of activities occurring for student affairs professionals in community colleges.

On May 20, the latest in the NASPA Community Colleges Symposium Series will be held in Arapahoe Community College, in Littleton, CO, just south of Denver. The Symposium is a low-cost, high-quality professional development event focused on content covering the role of the community college in society, student development theory, adult learning theory, and inclusive service delivery designed to meet the needs of the diverse community college student population. More information can be found at http://www.naspa.org/events/1516ccssacc.  The purpose of the symposium series is to bring professional development activities closer to those professionals who may not be able to attend regional or national conference events.

NASPA Community Colleges Online (NCC Online) held its latest professional development opportunity on April 28.  The topic was “Balancing Serving Student with Compliance Issues:  Stories from the Front Lines.  The panelists were Myna Perkins from Barton County Community College and Rebecca Ashford from Pellissippi State Community College. The NCC Online series is free and the sessions are recorded for those who were unable to attend the session.  The next NCC Online will be held in June and will look at the disruptions occurring in higher education and the impact that has for community college student affairs professionals.

As we prepare for joint Region IV West and East (WE) conference, please begin thinking about nominating someone for the Community College Professional Award.  Please go to https://www.naspa.org/about/awards/regions/naspa-iv-w-community-college-professional-award see additional details including how to submit a nominee. Student affairs professionals in all positions at community colleges are eligible for this award.

Speaking of the WE conference, please consider submitting a program proposal.  The deadline is June 6, 2016.  Additional information is located at https://www.naspa.org/events/intheheart/CFP. You can use this as a dry run for presenting at the NASPA national conference in March 2017.  Call for proposals for that conference open on May 16th.

In case you missed it, online access to the Community College Journal of Research and Practice is now included in your NASPA membership fee.
