Really Small Colleges and Universities Dial-in Conference

Thank you For your participation. We had over 50 campuses participate. Please look for the evaluation in the coming days!

dial-in conference sharing ideas on how to maximize resources with an enrollment of less than 1000 students

Thursday, September 22

3:00—4:00 p.m. (Eastern)

Presenters:          Ken Schneck, Dean of Students,
                                 Marlboro College (enrollment ~300)

                            Melanie Richardson, Dean of Students,
                                 Saint Martin's University (enrollment ~ 1000)

NASPA defines a "small" institution as one that boasts less than 5,000 students. But if you are working at a college or university with 1000 students or less, the resources of a "small" school are enough to make you feel teeny-weeny.  But, hey!, student affairs folks are nothing if not creative, executing programming and practices with limited human and financial capital. Following a brief presentation, participants will have an opportunity to share their most imaginative and resourceful ideas for sustaining resources at a (really) small college. Be prepared to both share and be inspired.

Welcome to the Small Colleges and Universities Division

Welcome to the Small Colleges and Universities Division site! I am honored and delighted to serve as the Division Chair for 2011 – 13. I hope that you find this site to be a great resource for all who care about small colleges and universities. We have an excellent Leadership Team and we are eager to strengthen our services and outreach to our division members.  I'm looking forward to finding creative ways to engage and serve our members. Please help us to know how we can best serve you.

I have been a student affairs professional for 32+ years (I keep trying to convince our students that I started when I was 9!). I have served as the vice president for student development/ dean of students since 1994 at Edgewood College which is a Dominican Catholic, co-ed college of about 2500 in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. My areas of responsibility include: Retention, Career Services, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Health Services, Personal Counseling, Security and Transportation Services, Residence Life and Student Activities. I am also the College's liaison to our two neighborhood associations and if you know anything about the political environment in Madison you can guess that I sometimes spend more time with our neighbors than with students. I've also worked at Cardinal Stritch College, Illinois Wesleyan and Stephen's College – so you can see that ALL of my full-time professional work has been at small colleges. My professional interests include Strategic Retention Planning, Developing Multicultural Competence and Assessment. On the personal side I love music, travel, reading and I am a home work-out devotee.

the 2012 Small colleges and universities institute

The Small Colleges and Universities Institute is a three-day residential program hosted at a small college or university where Senior Student Affairs Officers engage in discussion and reflection of critical issues in student affairs and the examination of effective and innovative programs. Ideally, the program would begin on a Saturday afternoon, June 23, 2012, and finish on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, with lunch. During the institute, participants have the opportunity to meet and interact with other administrators at like institutions from across the country, as well as presenters in the field. An intentional component of this Institute is living and learning together on the host campus; apply to be part of creating meaningful community at the Institute.
