Silent Auction
Welcome to the NASPA Foundation Silent Auction Homepage!
The Silent Auction is the NASPA Foundation's largest fundraiser. The event occurs annually at the NASPA Annual Conference. The 2008 Silent Auction will be held at the Annual Conference, which will be held March 8-12 in Boston, Massachusetts. Universities and individuals from around the United States donate items or services to be auctioned, and conference attendees have the opportunity to bid on them. The highest bidder on each item at the end of the allotted bidding time "wins" the prize. Individuals are welcome to bid on more than one item and may bid as many times on each item as they would like.
Last year, the Silent Auction raised nearly $20,000.00 for research projects and professional development programs in the field of student affairs. We seek to significantly increase the amount we raise this year. In order to do this, we need your help! Please consider donating items or your services to be auctioned, as well as placing bids on items that are on the auction block. We are also seeking help from a few volunteers to staff the booths at the conference. We thank you for your support, and wish you the best of luck with your bidding!
What is the NASPA Foundation?
The NASPA Foundation supports the advancement of knowledge concerning students, higher education institutions, and issues facing the student affairs profession.
Founded in 1974-1975, during the NASPA Presidency of John Blackburn, the Foundation furthers research that increases the understanding of the complexities of collegiate culture and furthers professional development of student affairs administrators.
Through the contributions of NASPA members and friends, the Foundation has established an investment program and restricted endowments that provide support for NASPA awards, professional development programs, regional activities, and research projects.

What types of donations are typical?
Donations come in all types of forms, sizes, and values. They traditionally range from consultations in areas of expertise, stays at vacations homes, signed sports collectibles, institutional paraphernalia, items indigenous to an institution's location, etc. From senior administrators to graduate students, there are opportunities for everyone to bid on at many financial levels.
Who gets the credit for donations?
Typically, the institution would get the credit for the donation unless it is a personal contribution by a member. If the individual is providing his/her own professional services, the tax-exempt credit will be given to the individual donor. Tax letters will be sent out in January 2009.
Am I obligated to provide the donation if I submit a Silent Auction Donation Form?
Once you submit a description of an item to be auctioned, you have committed to provide that item to the highest bidder at the conference.

If I have donated a personal service, vacation home, or similar type of item, how do I connect with the highest bidder?
At the conclusion of the auction, the contact information of the highest bidder and the donor of the service will be exchanged through emails from the Silent Auction Committee. The bidder and donor are then responsible for setting up the details of services provided.
How do I bid on an item?
Peruse the items that are being auctioned. If you decide that you would like to place a bid on one or more of the items, write your name, email address and contact number on the bid sheet for those items. Please be sure to use a number at which you can be contacted during the conference. Stop by the booth from time to time to check on the status of the items on which you are bidding.
How many items can I bid on, & how many times can I bid on each item?
You may bid on as many items and as many times as you would like until the auction is over.
How do I know if my bid is the highest bid on an item?
You will be notified if you are the highest bidder on a particular item. You are required to purchase the item and take it with you. There is however an exception to consultations, vacation packages, and specialty services, since these items can not be used until a later date.
If items won are not purchased and picked up at the conference, items will then be returned to the NASPA office for follow-up. Shipping costs will be covered by the winning bidder.
