Foundation Vice President Dr. Hazel J. Scott
Dr. Hazel J. Scott has served as the Vice President for Student Services at Georgia State University since July 2000. As the Chief Student Services Officer, she is responsible to the President for the management and leadership of the University's comprehensive student affairs program; participates in all major university-wide policy recommending committees; represents the campus on national, regional, and state committees related to student affairs; serves as the official university representative on student committees; consults with the Student Government Association; assists the university and students with community relations; and administers an annual budget of approximately $30 million. The Division of Student Services houses over 20 areas with a staff of over 150.
Since coming to GSU, Dr. Scott has focused on increasing student involvement and in program and service improvement for GSU students. She has been instrumental in directing resources towards a continued effort to better determine student satisfaction and contribute towards improvement of retention rates. She directed a process for establishing student learning outcomes for the entire Division, improvement of the campus environment, and developing outcome measures that assess the impact of policies, programs, services, and facilities on student learning, satisfaction, retention, and success. Under her leadership, the Division opened the first on-campus housing facility in the fall of 2002 with contemporary, loft style living.
Dr. Scott came to Georgia State after serving as Vice President for Student Services and Dean of Students at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Prior to that she held the position of Vice President for Student Affairs at Cal Poly State University and was Assistant Vice President for Student Academic Services at Oklahoma State University. She also held teaching and administrative positions at the University of Missouri, the University of Illinois, Bradley University, Illinois State University and the Cahokia School District. She holds the B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University, the masters and advanced certificate of education (specialist) degrees in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Illinois, and the Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Southern Illinois University.
Dr. Scott is well known throughout the country in the field of Student Affairs. She is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), serving in key positions over the last few years and was named a Pillar of the Profession in 2003. She is a member of several national honor associations, including Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society and Golden Key Honor Society. Her community involvement has been extensive throughout her career. Since coming to Atlanta, she was named as a board member of the Centennial Place Family YMCA and was appointed by the Mayor to the Status of Women Commission.
Dr. Scott retired on June 30, 2006.
