NASPA Responds to the NIU Tragedy
Colleagues:
It is with a very heavy heart that I write to you today. It is extremely difficult for me to imagine the agony our colleagues and the entire University community at Northern Illinois face. As I reflect on the past 10 months, I shudder as I think of the deaths of college and university students, I am impressed by the heroic efforts of so many campuses to be ready for the challenges we face, yet, I am devastated that we are facing such tragedy again and again. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the university family at Northern Illinois University, while we recognize the real possibility that this incident may rock the foundations on many campuses which have faced other tragedies. Please support your colleagues and your students, take time to extend yourselves to those affected, and in spite of it all, may we never give up on hope for peace in our communities.

Response to Colleagues from Brian Hemphill:
Dear NASPA Colleagues,
This is such a tragic time for our campus community, yet the outpouring of support from our professional community has been simply overwhelming. In time we will be able to thank each of you personally for your calls, e-mails, resources, and prayers. Please continue to keep our students, families, faculty, and staff in your thoughts.
As our NIU Huskie fight song states, we will certainly move "Forward, Together Forward" with your continued support and compassion.
My deepest appreciation,
Brian O. Hemphill, Ph. D
Vice President of Student Affairs
Northern Illinois University
