May 2012 News and Notes
Co-Chair Message
We (Jessica Edonick and Mary Hall) are the new National Co-Chairs of the Administrators for Graduate and Professional Student Services Knowledge Community (AGAPSS KC), effective the last day of the NASPA Conference in Phoenix. Jessica is currently the director for Commuter, Graduate and Transfer Student Programs and Services at Drexel University and Mary is the assistant director of the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology Graduate Program at the University of Virginia. We are both honored to serve in this role and look forward to working with you over the next two years as we build on the great foundation set by previous AGAPSS chairs. On that note, and on behalf of the AGAPSS community, we would like to thank Liz Thurston at Harvard University for her leadership over the past two years. Finally, please bear with us these first few months as we transition into the role of co-chairs and begin planning for Summer 2012 and beyond.
Looking forward to an exciting two years!
Jessica & Mary

Brief Notes @ the 2012 NASPA Conference
Annual AGAPSS KC Pre-conference Session
More than forty of our colleagues attended the 2012 NASPA AGAPSS pre-conference in sunny Phoenix, including 8 new participants who had either not attended a NASPA National Conference or not attended an AGAPSS pre-con prior to this year. While we did break with the AGAPSS tradition of coordinating with a local institution to host the session - the full-day session was at the Sheraton - we had active roundtable discussions and an outstanding presentation on assessment.
The morning roundtables included Technology, Managing Resources & Funding, Policies and Advocacy for Graduate Students, and Organizational Structure and Policy (broken into Law/Medicine/Professional Schools, Doctoral/Research, and Masters/Liberal Arts). We would like to thank the facilitators for leading great conversations through the morning: Liz Thurston (past AGAPSS KC Chair), Harvard; Katherine Hall-Hertel, UNC Charlotte; Marguerite Sharkey, NYU School of Law; DeAnna Chung, UPenn; Andree Robinson-Neal, Azusa Pacific University; Monika Gibson, Virginia Tech; and Angela Fleekop, University of San Francisco.
The afternoon session, "One Size Does Not Fit All: The Challenge of Assessment in Graduate and Professional Student Services" was presented by Katie O'Dair, Boston College and Annemakie Rice and Joe Levy, Campus Labs. Thank you Katie, Annemakie, and Joe for an excellent presentation! Notes and highlights from the roundtables and the presentation slides from the afternoon will be posted on the AGAPSS KC website.

With increasing calls for internal and external accountability, it is imperative that administrators in graduate and professional student services be able to understand and apply assessment practices within their work, to gather evidence on student learning and the student experience. This pre-conference workshop will help participants understand the basic process for assessment planning, will explore learning outcomes development, discuss the political and practical implications of sharing your data, and allow participants to develop an assessment plan of their own.
Background and Workshop Overview
This workshop will essentially be organized in two distinct sessions. The first part of the pre-conference will be focused on Key Issues in Graduate and Professional Student Services, as participants will break out in small groups with structured discussions being led by a facilitator. The critical issues will be identified prior to the conference through polling the AGAPSS constituency. Each group will generate key points, resources, and best practices through a template.
Yours truly,
Liz Thurston

Update your Member Profile
First, if you haven’t updated your profile in NASPA in a while, this is a good time to do so. Make sure to check off the AGAPSS KC and include any information that may help us help you! For example, if you work exclusively with a particular demographic (phD, law, medical, etc) students, let us know. We strive to connect our members with each other and your updated profile helps us do so!
AGAPSS Listserve
If you are not on our AGAPSS listserv and receiving our communications, we encourage you to join the listserv. It is a separate process from joining the KC. This means, just checking the AGAPSS box does not sign you up for our listserv. You must OPT IN by emailing the NASPA Office Liaison (jdesanto@naspa.org) to join.
Are you on our listserv but haven't joined the KC? Please update your member profile.
