PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP (FULL-DAY)
COLLABORATING ACROSS DIVISIONS TO MEET GRADUATE STUDENT NEEDS

Sunday, March 17
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Katherine Hall-Hertel, UNC Charlotte
Christine Wilson, UCLA
Penny Rue, UC San Diego

Graduate student needs differ significantly from those of traditionally-aged undergraduates. Whether they are master’s or doctoral students, professional or academic degree seekers, part-time or full-time, funded or not – graduate students experience their academic journey and socialization in ways that can promote isolation and anxiety This pre-conference workshop will explore the ways in which successful collaborations are built across campus. An SSAO from a large research university and a senior administrator from a graduate division will discuss how they have built successful partnerships on behalf of graduate students. Whether the issue is graduate housing, funding and assistantships or internship and career placements, these leaders have wisdom to share. Participants will learn how to build coalitions to meet the needs of graduate students and how to address and overcome the multitude of challenges that arise when building these coalitions. The afternoon sessions will include sharing of information and best practices related to collaborating across divisions, and allow participants to select a round table conversation that best addresses their most pressing concerns.
