WEBINARS: PAST AND FUTURE
The CSKC would like to thank all participants of the recent KC-sponsored webinar, entitled "H1N1 Outbreak: Lessons Learned and Preparation for the Next Pandemic". A special thanks as well to Donna Barry, Dr. Anita Barkin, Dr. Michael Mardis, and Dennis Sullivan for facilitating.
The CSKC would also like to announce our NEXT sponsored webinar, entitled "Practical Approaches to the Complexities of the Student Threat Assessment Process and Behavioral Intervention Teams". Please join us on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 from 3:00 to 4:30 EST for this informative webinar facilitated by Dr. Kelly Wesener and Dr. Micky Sharma of Northern Illinois University.
Due to incidents of violence at colleges and universities, state and federal governments are increasingly mandating campus safety measures. It is clear that the movement toward a proactive response to mitigating threats on a college campus continues to be a very real implication of state and federal laws. The actual practice of assessing and responding to threats is complex but vitally important on campuses today.
This webinar will specifically focus on the many legal and practical issues involved in the protocols and daily operations of a student behavioral intervention team. Topics discussed will include: defining the breadth of the team's charge, team composition, record-keeping, gathering student information, case management, incorporating existing university protocols, and educating the campus community about threat assessment. A case study will be used to illustrate the multifaceted decision-making process and many factors and implications the team must consider when assessing and responding to threats.
Implementation of the Integrated Threat Assessment Matrix will also be discussed. This matrix applies research from multiple disciplines and incorporates appropriate behavioral management strategies for managing mental health concerns, thought and behavior patterns, and threat levels.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Establish strategies to manage the legal and practical concerns involved in the protocols and operations of a student behavioral intervention team.
- Identify key decision-making points and implications of choices made within the threat assessment and intervention process.
- Become familiar with the Integrated Threat Assessment Matrix as a tool for threat assessment and intervention.

NASPA Crisis Management in Student Affairs (E-Course)
The Campus Safety Knowledge Community is a cooperating sponsor of NASPA’s Crisis Management in Student Affairs (E-Course) which will take place March 16 – April 9, 2009. More information can be found below:
Overview
Preparations and response to a campus crisis require a coordinated effort including Student Affairs. Learn about crisis management and how you as a new professional or staff manager can contribute to crisis response on your campus.
What’s an E-Course?
NASPA offers three-week long e-courses that allow for participants to explore a specific topic more in-depth. E-courses are mainly asynchronous. Participants can log into the course at any time over the three week period to engage in various course modules. These modules consist of assigned readings, instructor recommended homework in the form of assignments, and discussion board questions. Courses also contain two to three synchronous conference calls for heightened participant interaction with the instructor and each other.
For more information about the E-Course and the link to on-line registration, please follow the link below.

NewsLetters
From the Chronicle of Higher Education's afternoon Newsblog, Wednesday, Jan. 14:
Campus Threat-Assessment Teams Get a Professional Association
Before the mass shootings at Virginia Tech, threat-assessment teams were largely nonexistent or dormant. Starting tomorrow they will have their own professional association. The National Behavioral Intervention Team Association abbreviated as the relatively pronounceable Nabita (nah-BIT-ah) will provide professional development and support to colleges, schools, and workplaces that use what the group callcaring prevention and intervention to help troubled individuals and prevent violence. Its president, Brett A. Sokolow, and executive director, W. Scott Lewis, are partners in the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management, a nonprofit consulting firm that has helped hundreds of colleges set up behavioral-intervention teams. Among colleges, schools, and workplaces, about 1,600 teams are now in operation, the vast majority of them becoming active only in the past two years, Mr. Sokolow said. Annual institutional fees for colleges in the association range from $399 to $1,499, and the group is actively recruiting members. It has released a report,Threat Assessment in the Campus Setting to mark its formation and plans to hold a national conference in December.
