Our Mission
The mission of the KCSLP is to serve as a resource for higher education professional who have a professional interest in young-adult (i.e., college students) leadership training, education, and development. The Community will share best practices, provide critical evaluation of the field, examine standards for leadership programs, support national and regional efforts to develop student leadership programs, make contributions to the literature, recognize exemplary programs, and cultivate a forum for the presentation of new ideas.

Standing Committee Interest:
- Leadership Educator's Institute (program reviewers, volunteers at the conference, coordinating special events for the national conference)
- 2009 NASPA Annual Conference pre-conference workshop
- Phone Conference Speaker Series (recruiting speakers, advertising, possibly facilitating a conference)
- Leadership Literature Review (continuing to update our resources)
- Spotlight Series (create recognition program for campus leadership)
- Website (ongoing maintenance/updates, work with webmaster to keep up to date)
Special Projects:
- Electronic - Newsletter Coordinator(s) - a new endeavor to increase communication within SLP-KC membership
- Knowledge Community Awards Program - review other KC's awards program, create criteria for our own, advertise and establish the selection process
- Strategic Planning Committee Team (SPCT) - the SPCT began last year in an effort to create a strategic plan
- SLP-KC Regional Role Descriptions - work with regional partners to formalize a role description of what it means to be a regional SLP-KC representative

Leadership Educators Institute Developed for New and Mid-Level Student Affairs Educators

Institute Description: Leadership education of college and university students is an important and ongoing process within higher education institutions. Student affairs professionals play a quintessential role in coordinating, shaping, and evaluating this area through developing leadership courses and programs, creating co-curricular opportunities, and utilizing new technologies. The Leadership Educators Institute (LEI) is an innovative forum geared specifically towards new to mid-level student affairs professionals and leadership educators with these responsibilities. Participants will learn from plenary speakers and educational sessions, as well as through engaging in active learning and dialogue with one another during roundtable sessions. The Institute will assist participants with program and leadership course development and provide opportunities to learn through participation in smaller group environments on leadership education across institutional type and identity groups.

What is The National Collegiate Leadership Conference?
The National Collegiate Leadership Conference is a three day conference that brings together students from both the United States and internationally to learn leadership skills, cultivate social responsibility, break down leadership barriers, and to adopt leadership as a way of life. This year we are celebrating our 21st year of striving to make leadership development as accessible as possible. We offer over sixty workshops, community service projects, teambuilding and networking activities, motivational speakers, and a dinner with a nationally recognized keynote speaker. The 2008 conference brought together over 500 students from 50 institutions, 22 states, and 4 countries. The cost for the 2009 conference is $50 per participant.

Fellowships for 2009-2010 Asia Pacific Leadership Program

The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program for 2009-10. Entering its eight year, the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region. The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 48 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. All participants receive an APLP Entrance Fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.
The Asia Pacific Leadership Program seeks outstanding individuals with proven leadership experience or high leadership potential from across
the Asia Pacific region, North America and beyond. All participants have at least a Bachelors degree with the majority having graduate degrees as well. At least 20 countries are represented in each cohort. APLP Fellows come together from all walks of life, including areas as diverse as government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education.
APLP participants will gain broad regional perspectives, become knowledgeable about the critical challenges facing the Asia Pacific region, and be trained to exercise leadership and promote cooperation. The APLP empowers leaders with the knowledge, skills, experiences, and supportive community needed to successfully navigate personal and regional change in the 21st century.
