Sustaining Your Sustainability
This article is a summary of the 2010 NASPA presentation, Sustaining Your Sustainability. This presentation examined some important and necessary components to any design or plan to successfully incorporate and institutionalize sustainability at an institution. The additional emphasis in Navigating the Journey sought to contextualize this effort through three progressive and enveloping movements: an institution's vision, the particular institution of higher education, and the practices and strategies used to manage the process from "where you are now" to "where you desire to be".
Bringing these two themes together involved first a critical examination of an organization's vision of sustainability and
whether or not it was comprehensive enough to connect with every action, decision, and department of the institution. Second, we thematic, but close, look at how a comprehensive vision of sustainability connects with the central purposes and services of higher education. Third, we pulled research and practice from the field of Knowledge Management to explain what it means to take on a comprehensive sustainability plan within higher education. We described how initiating a systemic vision (sustainability) within a systemic context (an institution) required planning, design, and execution strategies that were equally systemic in approach and impact. Lastly, we discussed some of the implications that could result for our campuses and its faculty, staff, and students from engaging in this process.
