Conference Description
Colleges and universities are reporting an increase in both the number of students with mental health problems and the complexity and severity of issues. Often, the increased numbers overburden counseling and psychological services available. Substance abuse and other risky behaviors often co-exist with depression and other can mask broader mental health needs when co-occurring with depression and other emotional disorders. If left untreated, these problems can impact students' emotional and social development as well as their academic success and retention.
Student affairs administrators, faculty, resident directors, and counselors are often on the front lines with distressed students, and they - along with many other campus constituencies - are searching for ways to best serve students' individual needs and those of the student body as a whole. Since mental health issues affect not just the individual student but the campus as a whole, successful approaches require collaboration between campus departments and between a college and the local community.
From health and wellness concerns to multicultural and gender issues, interventions for mental health and collaboration across campus are key to the success of students in academia and beyond. To this end, the conference will explore the following topics:
o Scope of student mental health problems on campus
o Overall framework for comprehensively addressing mental health
o Specific strategies successfully implemented by individual campuses
o Knowledge and skills needed to create a campus environment that promotes student mental health
Working Conference: Team Attendance The conference planning committee believes that those institutions sending multi-disciplinary teams to the conference will reap the greatest benefit, as there will be structured opportunities to discuss effective campus collaborations. The committee encourages campuses to send representatives from the following areas in order to allow for substantive conversations around how to create change on your campus: - Academic Affairs

Pre-Conference Workshops
Pre-Conference Workshops take place on Thursday, January 17 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. You may only choose one pre-conference workshop, as they occur at the same time. Registration can be completed online or via the paper registration form. CEU credits are available for pre-conference workshops.
Violence and Trauma on Campus - Prevention & Response presented by James F. Campbell, Ph.D This program will present a comprehensive model for responding to violent events and other traumatic incidents on a college campus. The program will examine principles of psychological first aid, consultation with crisis management teams, attending to the needs of multiple stakeholders, promoting resilience, and will address the controversy surrounding psychological debriefing. A methodology for identifying and defusing threatening individuals will also be examined. Extensive handouts and practical strategies will be provided.
Participants will be able to: 1. Identify individual and organizational needs subsequent to violent events or other traumatic incidents on campus. | 2. Describe a range of strategies designed to assist members of a community during a crisis. | 3. Describe the evidence and controversy associated with group interventions for trauma, such as psychological debriefing. 4. Describe a method intervening with and defusing a threatening individual. | Promoting Holistic Health and Wellness On Campus: Improving Student Success through Reducing Drinking and Increasing Mental Well-being presented by Beth DeRicco, Center for College Health & Safety, Melissa Kenzig, Sarah Mart, Syracuse University How do you created an integrated approach to health that fosters student's academic, mental, social and spiritual well being? Instead of simply focusing on problematic behavior, this session will highlight the way in which a comprehensive and coordinated program promoting health and safety assists students in meeting learning outcomes.
Participants will learn about a comprehensive ecological approach to campus health and safety, including a planning and evaluation process. Research updates will be provided and exercises and worksheets will assist participants in identifying how to adapt research and exemplary programs to their own campus.
Violence Prevention and Safety Promotion in Higher Education Settings: Moving Towards a Comprehensive Approach (presented by Linda Langford, Sc.D., Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention) Effective efforts to prevent campus violence and promote a safe environment will require a comprehensive, coordinated set of programs, policies, and services that are adapted to local circumstances. This session begins with a framework for a comprehensive approach to campus violence prevention, including a planning and evaluation process. This introduction is followed by exercises designed to help participants apply the framework and planning process back on campus. Topics include assessing and prioritizing problems on campus, using data to inform strategy design, creating a strategic plan, coordinating prevention efforts, and building partnerships. This session will provide participants with a set of principles and a systematic process that campus and community stakeholders can use to design an effective violence prevention initiative.
Call for Programs The Call for Programs is now Closed.
The deadline to submit programs was November 2, 2007. Those who did submit will hear the status by November 28, 2007.
The conference planning committee will give preference to program submissions that provide an evidence-based, collaborative approach to "mental well-being" as it relates to overall wellness (e.g. physical health, stress management, social relationships, spirituality and religiosity, etc.)
Call for Programs Deadline: November 2, 2007 The conference plenary speakers and various concurrent sessions will provide information for all institutional types on the topic areas below:
- Collaborations to address disruptive behaviors and actions of students with mental health conditions
- What has your campus done to collaborate on judicial and educational sanctions in response to student behavioral issues?
- What policies and procedures have been implemented with success in dealing with disruptive and disturbing behaviors?
- Who is at the table when creating these policies and procedures?
- Campus-wide programs for supporting students with mental health conditions
- What collaborative programs have been established on your campus to ensure the success of students with mental health conditions?
- What programs and services have been created on your campus to support students' mental health during transitions? (e.g., first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior programming)
- What innovative programs involving collaborative efforts by Disability Services and Counseling Centers are available?
- What departments or divisions have coordinated prevention and intervention services in order to promote mental well-being? (e.g. career services, athletics, academic support, student activities, public safety, etc.)
- Academic and faculty strategies to manage campus mental health education, prevention efforts, and graduation of competent students
- How do faculty members collaborate with student affairs, counseling and others across the university?
- How are students with obvious mental health issues handled in individual classrooms? What support systems exist for both students and faculty?
- How do you coordinate departments and divisions to support faculty? What policies and procedures have been created to assist this coordination?
- What are cutting edge practices regarding the treatment of students with co-occurring mental health and AOD issues and/or sanctions on your campus?
- Coordination of counseling, health, wellness, and student affairs services
- What does your campus do to ensure that college and university staff who are dealing with students are on the same page?
- Have you observed an increased level of certain behaviors by students and how has the entire campus coordinated the prevention and intervention process?
- What is your model of collaboration and how does your infrastructure assist in serving students with mental health concerns? Do combined counseling and health centers work? If so, how have you successfully implemented this model?
- What do senior student affairs officers, presidents and others want to know and what can counselors legally tell them?

Henry Chung, MD, Associate Vice President of Student Health, New York University Transforming Recognition and Treatment of Depression Among Students: Outcomes of College Breakthrough Series - Depression (CBS-D) Project College Breakthrough Series - Depression, a landmark quality improvement pilot project for depression recognition and treatment that involves 8 diverse universities (NYU, Princeton, Cornell, St. Lawrence, Case Western, Baruch and Hunter Colleges of CUNY, and Northeastern University), will be presenting outcomes data for the first time. The project uses depression screening in primary care to reach thousands of students, and then provides depressed students a collaborative model of care that is evidence based and outcomes driven. Using a shared learning model to share best practices and overcome system barriers among diverse health and counseling services, recognition and treatment of depression is enhanced through integration and systematic redesign of services to improve student functional recovery and decrease suicide risk for depressed students.
Ann Franke, Esq., President, WiseResults, LLC Learning from the Courts: Practical Lessons from Student Mental Health Cases College student mental health remains an unsettled area of the law. What, exactly, are an institution's legal obligations for treatment, leaves of absence, discipline, and safety? As much as administrators might wish, they cannot look to court decisions for exact solutions to all their problems. Each case outcome depends heavily on its unique facts. Judges and juries will look closely at the student's symptoms, communications (if any) among the student, institution and family, and nuances of the institution's policies and how it applied them. Even such "fact-intensive" cases, however, contain seeds of more general advice. In this session we will find the guidance, sometimes obvious and sometimes not, from the leading college student mental health cases. Audience members will come away with practical steps to strike a better balance between the rights and responsibilities of institutions and students.
Emil Rodolfa, PhD, Director, Counseling & Psychological Services, University of California - Davis Where Do We Go from Here? College student mental health is based on a collaborative approach to creating a campus environment that supports and fosters students' wellbeing. This presentation will highlight the efforts of the University of California system to understand and enhance college student mental health. Changes in the student population and the resources necessary to facilitate their personal, emotional and academic growth will be examined. National events that contribute to the campus environment will be described and recommendations to improve services to students resulting in a campus of care will be provided.

Group Discounts: Save $10.00 off each registration when registering two individuals from the same institution. Save $20.00 off each registration when registering three or more from the same institution. In order to receive group discounts, registration forms must be faxed together into the NASPA Office at 202-797-1157. We will not make exceptions for separate registrations.
Purchase orders: Institutional purchase orders will be accepted but the NASPA office must receive full payment before conference registration materials are received on site. (Please make note that onsite payment will incur a $50.00 late fee.) Purchase orders do not constitute payment. Registrations received without a purchase order number will not be registered. If full payment is not received by December 21, 2007, the individual will be charged a $50.00 late fee.
Cancellation Policy: Refunds will be given for cancellations, received in writing by December 21, 2007, less a $35.00 processing fee. In addition, a processing fee of $35.00 per registration will be charged for credit cards declined or to change payment methods after the initial payment is processed. With prior approval, anyone registered but who cannot attend may send a substitute. Substitution information must come in writing from the registered participant. The membership status of the substitute must be the same as the registrant in order to have the same registration fee applied. Additional charges may apply if the membership status is not the same. The Conference may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, fees will be refunded; however, NASPA will not be responsible for additional costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, and/or travel agencies.
