On Boarding as a new Vice President of Student Affairs: A Confidential Discussion
Participation in this seminar will be limited. All participants will be expected to hold the entire discussion in confidence.
Every new vice president of student affairs will face any number of difficult decisions and complex issues upon taking up a new position. For example, during the search process candidates are told about the things that those participating in the process would like to see changed. One potential pitfall for a new vice president is assuming that the message for change articulated during the search process actually constitutes a charge for action.
This discussion will be an opportunity for a new vice president of student affairs to candidly reflect and discuss strategies for successfully on boarding to the senior student affairs position at a new institution. This discussion will also include strategies for identifying resources that are available to senior professionals that could be of assistance as you assess and evaluate programs and work to build your staff.
Participants must be willing to prepare and present an actual case from their own experience in the form of short written (less than one page) synopsis or to present a question that they wish to have the group consider. Participants will reflect together on the resolution and attendant consequences of each case. The goal of this discussion is for each person to gain a deeper understanding of how to successfully navigate their on boarding process.
* This session is sponsored by The Spelman & Johnson Group and will be presented by Ellen Heffernan, Partner.

About James E. Scott
A native of Michigan, Scott started his career in education in 1969 as a high school history teacher and guidance counselor in the Willow Run, Michigan, public school system. Scott received his bachelor's degree in history from Eastern Michigan University in 1969 and his master's in guidance and counseling, also from Eastern Michigan, in 1971. He earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan's Center for the Study of Higher Education in 1978 and did postdoctoral studies at Harvard University in 1988.
From 1972 to 1976, Scott was assistant dean of students at Eastern Michigan University. He then served as associate dean of students and director of the Office of Campus Life at Eastern Michigan until 1981. In 1981 he became the dean of students at the University of Florida. In 1993, he left UF to become vice president for student services at Georgia State University, but returned to UF six years later where he served as vice president of student affairs until his untimely death in 2003, after a 16-month battle with cancer.
Scott served NASPA with distinction in many different positions, including conference chair (1992) and president (1994). Scott, the winner of many awards, was a Fred Turner Award recipient in 1998 and named a Pillar of the Profession in 2002. Scott was instrumental in the creation of the Academy and provided vision and goals that have provided SSAO's with cutting edge leadership and training since its inception.
In July of 2003, the Board of Directors unanimously approved naming the Academy, the "James E. Scott Academy for Leadership and Executive Effectiveness" in his honor.
