2010 Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention & Intervention  Conference

The prevalence of alcohol abuse continues to be a serious problem facing college students throughout the country.  Devastating alcohol-related incidents and legal action against universities have flooded the media.  Administrators must be proactive and establish infrastructures that will form a tight weave of policies and procedures which will provide less room for error and more accountability to the process.  Institutions must create community standards and provide a set of values that will aid in deterring alcohol abuse.

  • What systems, policies, and procedures are in place to sharpen institutional decision-making and policy development?

  • How does the college/university communication system inform and involve senior administration and legal advisors during alcohol-related incidents?

  • How do ensure that alcohol abuse prevention efforts are integrated throughout the institution?

Several reports, including the Surgeon General Report, the NIAAA Report, and information from many other leading organizations, have made it clear that colleges and universities must focus on high-risk student environments when creating their alcohol abuse prevention efforts.  Colleges and universities must go beyond intervening with only the high-risk population of students and must address the environment for both high and low-risk students.

Assessment, strategic planning, research and evaluation, and legislative mandates should be a part of this collaborative effort across the academy.  This innovative conference will provide a venue to discuss research on effective prevention, intervention, individual and environmental practices and specific information on alcohol use and health status.

This three-day conference will bring together senior-level campus administrators, prevention and education staff and researchers from the alcohol and other drug arena to focus on advancing knowledge and information sharing about alcohol and other drug use on colleges and universities.  These discussions will provide a forum for institutional teams to either begin or continue their work on alcohol abuse prevention for their college and university campuses.
