Exceptional SSAO Leadership: Strategies and Competencies for Success
Featuring contributing authors from the new book published in March 2011
edited by Shannon Ellis and Gwendolyn Jordan Dungy
The Richard F. Stevens Institute for senior student affairs officers (SSAO) has been completely redesigned and reimagined to be the premier executive training/retreat for a small and select group of SSAO's. The Stevens Institute is a retreat with a mission—to enhance and develop articulated SSAO competencies at an advanced level. This Institute is specifically for the most senior student affairs officer on a campus. Individuals who report directly to the president or provost who are in charge of the entire student affairs division/department.
NASPA and ACPA jointly endorsed Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Practitioners in July, 2010, which defines competencies for SSAO's at basic, intermediate and advanced levels. The Richard F. Stevens Institute training program will focus on developing and enhancing knowledge and skills at intermediate and advanced levels of competency in the context of cutting edge issues facing modern SSAO's.
The first part of this year's Richard F. Stevens Institute will focus primarily on the law, policy and governance competency area and will feature intensive training on the topic of so-called 'CARE' or behavioral/threat assessment teams and managing at-risk and dangerous students. Participants will receive over 25 hours of instruction/training -- in a collegial, hands-on instructional setting--from leading national experts with decades of experience as SSAOs and/or training SSAOs.
The second part of the Stevens will provide participants with the most up-to-date, innovative, and motivating information from current senior student affairs officers. Topics will include:
The Student Affairs Innovation Imperative
Competencies for Senior Student Affairs Officers
The Road to the Presidency: Competencies for SSAOs who will be Presidents
And much more!
More than just an intensive training and learning experience, the Richard F. Stevens Institute is a retreat that emphasizes building good decision making and is committed to rejuvenating the decision makers.
Set in relaxing and stunning Lake Tahoe the Richard F. Stevens Institute is an opportunity to recharge, reenergize and refresh with colleagues committed to nurturing the balance necessary to make the sound and sometimes difficult decisions that protect our students and help them grow and learn.
Join a select group of experienced colleagues for a rejuvenating personal and professional development opportunity in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

About Richard F. Stevens
The Institute carries the name of Richard F. Stevens in recognition and in honor of Dick's significant involvement with it from 1977 until his death in 1986. In 1977, while serving as vice president for student affairs at the University of New Hampshire, Dick agreed to be the institute's coordinator. He continued in that capacity through 1980, during which time, he established the institute as a signature NASPA program. In 1980, Dick became NASPA's Director of Governmental and Association Relations, and then the Assistant Executive Director. In 1981, Richard Stevens became NASPA's Executive Director.
