Region I Awards

Each Year Region I celebrates its outstanding professionals through its Region I awards process. These awards are given out annually at the Regional Conference and recognize both state and regional recipients. The awards provide the opportunity for regional NASPA members to acknowledge the efforts and professional contributions of current and future professionals who have demonstrated exemplary service, commitment to students, a desire to achieve, and outstanding leadership.

2012 Award Nominations

NASPA Region I is excited to begin the award nomination process, seeking to recognize and honor those colleagues who demonstrate consistent commitment to students, service to their institution and NASPA, dedicated leadership, and the pursuit of achievement in the field.  Below you will find descriptions of each of our awards.

Please review all of the awards below and consider both your own campus colleagues, as well as those from other campuses whom you have noticed through collaborations, conferences, or programs.  Region I seeks to recognize exceptional contributions within our region during our comprehensive awards program at the Region I Conference, taking place November 11-14, 2012 in beautiful Mystic, Connecticut.

Award nominations can be submitted starting Friday, June 15, 2012.  The deadline for submitting state and regional award nominations is July 16, 2012.  National awards have a fall deadline; see the NASPA national web site for more information.

Prior to your efforts, please be aware of the following:

  • If the award criterion requires nominee to be a NASPA Individual or Institutional Member, please log in to review the NASPA Membership Directory to confirm.

  • Review the PAST RECIPIENT list on the Region I Awards Website to see if they have been recognized for that specific award in previous years.

  • Every nomination (state, regional, national) must be submitted via a Google survey directly to Alison Black, who will then forward all nominations to the national office.  This survey will be sent to all Region I members by June 15th.

  • The winners will be announced at the regional conference in November.

To assist you with your process, please have the following information available and ready to be uploaded when nominating:

  1. Nominee’s name, current institution, title, and address.
  2. For a State or Regional Award nomination, you will need to upload a your nomination letter and at least two additional letters of support, with a maximum of five letters.  The appropriate individual will contact all nominees and ask for their résumé/CV, if needed, before the review and selection process begins.
  3. For a National Award nomination, you will need to upload a copy of their résumé/CV, your nomination letter, and at least two additional letters of support, with a maximum of five letters.

State Awards

All State Award nominees will be reviewed by the appropriate State Director and his/her Selection Committee.

Catch a Rising Star Scholarship (Undergraduate Student)
NASPA membership is not required for this nominee.  The recipient will receive a scholarship in the amount of their registration for the cost of SALT - OR - for the Annual Conference.

  • Has made a significant contribution to the home campus
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Exceeded the expectations of their respective leadership positions
  • Shown an interest in the field of student affairs

Richard F. Stevens Outstanding Graduate Student
NASPA membership is not required for this nominee.  The recipient will receive a scholarship in the amount of their registration cost for the Annual Conference.

  • Has made a significant contribution to the home campus
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Exceeded the expectations of their respective leadership positions
  • Assumed a leadership role at their institution and/or at the state or regional levels
  • Demonstrated an interest in the field of student affairs

Richard F. Stevens Outstanding New Professional
NASPA membership is required for this nominee.  The recipient will receive a scholarship in the amount of their registration cost for the Annual Conference.  One of the six recipients of the New Professional Award will be selected as the Region I Outstanding New Professional for national recognition.

  • Served four or fewer years in a full time position in higher education
  • Has made significant contributions to both the institution and the profession

Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional
NASPA membership is required for this nominee. One of the six recipients of the Mid-Level Professional Award will be selected as the Region I Outstanding Mid-Level Professional for national recognition.

  • Served a minimum of five years in student affairs
  • Demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the profession
  • Has contributed to programs that address the needs of students
  • Is experienced in creating campus environments that promote student learning and personal development

Program of the Year
NASPA membership is required for this institution, nominee, or nominator from the institution.  One of the six recipients of the Program of the Year Award will be selected as the Region I Exemplary Program for national recognition.

  • Programs must have been implemented and evaluated within the previous three years
  • Programs will be evaluated on:
    1. Innovation and creativity
    1. Contribution to student development and/or professional development
    2. Contribution to the home institution
    3. Timeliness of topic

 

Regional Awards

All Regional Awards will be reviewed by a Regional Selection Committee.

Distinguished Accomplishment
NASPA membership is required for this nominee.

The Distinguished Accomplishment Award is presented to a Region I member who has distinguished him/herself in the field of student affairs administration through: leadership in the profession, contributions to the literature as an editor, author or researcher, or as an educator contributing to the training of new professionals.

Continuous Service Award
NASPA membership is required for this nominee.

The Continuous Service Award recipients exemplify the spirit of volunteerism as it applies to NASPA at the state, regional or national level. The nominee should have a record of significant involvement in Region I, which may include active committee membership, board membership, conference presentation, or volunteer service.

Institutional Leadership Award
NASPA membership is required for this nominee.

The Institutional Leadership Award is in recognition of a professional who has contributed significantly to the growth and development of his/her home institution in the areas of programs, policies, staff or student development.

NEEED Award
NASPA membership is required for this nominee and/or their institution.

The Network for Educational Equity and Ethnic Diversity (NEEED) annually acknowledges an individual, member institution or individual program, which "embraces the values inherent in racial and ethnic groups through commitment to individual and community understanding." Nominations may consider the constituents involved, the impact on the campus, and the program goals and objectives. Schools may nominate their own programs. 

Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Service as a Dean
NASPA membership is required for this nominee. The winner of this category will also be forwarded to the NASPA national office for consideration for recognition at the national level.  The National Office defines "Dean" as any title that denotes the lead student affairs officer on campus.

This award is given to a dean who has demonstrated sustained professional service in student affairs work, high-level competency in administrative skills, innovative response in meeting students' varied and emerging needs, effectiveness in developing junior staff members, and leadership in community and university affairs. This award recipient must have also earned stature among and support of students, faculty, and fellow administrators on his or her campus and made significant contributions to the field through publications or professional involvement. This award honors NASPA's founding president (1919-20) and former dean of men at the University of Wisconsin. 

The President's Award
NASPA membership is not required for this nominee.  The winner of this category will also be forwarded to the NASPA national office for consideration for recognition at the national level.

This award is a special recognition given to a college or university president who has, over a sustained period of time, advanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting student affairs staff and programs.

Outstanding Contribution to Literature or Research
NASPA membership is required for this nominee.  The winner of this category will also be forwarded to the NASPA national office for consideration for recognition at the national level.

Nominees for this award must demonstrate professional commitment to student affairs administration. Their literature and/or research will be judged by how well student affairs practitioners use it. The literature and/or research should be applicable to national use and not restricted to local or regional application. This award is not intended as recognition of publication or research sponsored by or under the auspices of NASPA. 

Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education
NASPA membership is not required for this nominee.  The winner of this category will also be forwarded to the NASPA national office for consideration for recognition at the national level.

This award is reserved for one who has rendered service in programs, policies, or research that has made a national impact and who has contributed to the broad reach of higher education. 

Community College Professional Award
Nominee is required to be a current NASPA member - OR - have retired from the region.  The recipient of this award will be submitted as the regional candidate for the National Community College Professional Award.

This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to NASPA and/or the profession.  Student Affairs professional in all positions are eligible for this award.  The individual nominated must meet the following criteria

  • Demonstrated active involvement with the profession
  • Contributed to creating a campus environment that promotes student learning and personal development
  • Outstanding individual contribution in innovative and responsive services and programs that address varied and emerging needs of student
  • A minimum of five years experience in student affairs.

 

National Awards

Region I is not specifically affiliated with the review of the National Awards, however, we would like to encourage the members of Region I to be involved with and in support of recognition efforts at all levels of NASPA.  Please review the appropriate link to determine eligibility and submission requirements.  Should you nominate a colleague in Region I for one of the National Awards, please notify the Awards Coordinator for recognition of the nominee at the Annual Conference.

Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to NASPA
Those nominated for the Regional Continuous Service Award and meet the additional criteria of this award would be excellent submissions for National consideration.  This award is submitted via the NASPA Awards site under "National Awards."  Submissions due by November 1, 2012.  Please visit http://www.naspa.org/programs/awards/annual.cfm for additional information.

This award honors NASPA members who have demonstrated continuous NASPA membership for 10 or more years, and who have served in a leadership role at the state, regional, or national level of NASPA.

Robert H. Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member
This award is submitted via the NASPA Awards site under "National Awards."  Submissions due by November 1, 2012.  Please visit http://www.naspa.org/programs/awards/annual.cfm for additional information.

This award is given to a tenured faculty member who is teaching full-time in a graduate preparation program in student affairs.  Nominees must be a personal inspiration to graduate students, have served on doctoral committees, have distinguished records of scholarly achievement including publication in relevant literature, and have made significant contributions to professional associations.

Excellence Awards
Awards submissions in this category can be submitted by visiting the Excellence Awards site.  Submissions are due by October 15, 2012.  Please see http://www.naspa.org/programs/awards/excellence.cfm for additional information regarding these awards in ten categories.

NASPA recognizes the contribution of members who are transforming higher education through outstanding programs, innovative services, and effective administration.

Melvene D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award

The purpose of the Melvene. D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award is to encourage high quality research relevant to the field of college student services administration and the general field of student affairs, and to recognize outstanding dissertation research conducted by doctoral degree recipients presently in or intending to enter the student affairs profession.

Ruth Strang Research Award

The Ruth Strang Research Award is sponsored by the NASPA Center for Scholarship, Research, and Professional Development for Women (Center for Women) to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions to the body of literature concerning women in higher education.  This award encourages high-quality research related to women in higher education and seeks to promote research by, for, and about women.

Submissions may be unpublished articles, academic papers, or portfolios that show strong scholarship and address topics relevant to the education of women and their personal and professional development.
