REGION I MID-LEVEL INSTITUTE

Each year Region I offers its Mid-Level Institute. The institute is designed to provide learning opportunities for mid-level managers to reflect on the mid-level experience, discuss topical issues, examine career path and preparedness, and receive mentoring from senior student affairs officers.

The Institute occurs each spring and is comprised of four, one day sessions that span several months. Individuals apply to the Institute in the early spring and are accepted based on their fulfilling certain criteria, as well as a review of their statement of interest and résumé.

The Institute is a great opportunity to further your professional development. Please follow the links below for information on the current Mid-Level Institute as well as information regarding past participants and topics.

2009 Institute

Region I is pleased to offer once again its institute for mid-level managers this coming spring. The call for applications for the 2009 institute will be sent out via email in mid-December.

“Making the Most of the Middle” is scheduled for four days, one day in each of the months of March through June, and will create an environment where mid- level managers explore the challenges and rewards of leading from the middle. Specific goals for the Mid-Level Institute include:

  •  Providing a collegial environment where mid-level managers examine the mid-level experience, with emphasis on exploration of challenges and rewards;
  •  Creating opportunities for self-reflection, networking, and big-picture thinking;
  •  Facilitating an interactive learning environment where mid-level managers can discuss current topics;
  •  Mentoring from senior student affairs officers (SSAOs);
  •  Examining the career path, with emphasis on identifying one's own preparedness to pursue opportunities to advance to the next level.

The sessions are tentatively scheduled for the following dates in 2009::

  •  Thursday, March 19, at University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA

  •  Friday, April 17, at NHTI, Concord, NH
  •  Thursday, May 7, at Springfield College, Springfield, MA

  •  Thursday, June 18, at University of New England, Biddeford, ME

The range of topics to be covered in 2009 tentatively include the following: why we do what we do, Pillars of the Profession and their take on institutional politics and ethics, risk management, supervision (managing both up and down), conflict resolution, financial management, career issues, and a reflective assessment of being at the mid-level.  In addition, all of our lunches will be "working lunches" with relevant topics for informal discussion.

Applicants for the 2009 Mid-Level Institute should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of five years as a full-time student affairs professional; and
  • Responsibility for the direction, control, or supervision of one or more student affairs functions, or one or more professional staff members;
  • Priority consideration will be given first to NASPA members, then to non-members working at NASPA member institutions, and finally to non-members from non-member institutions.
  • Again, the call for applications will be going out in mid-December, and applications will be due in late January.  this website will be updated again at application time.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact a member of the 2009 planning team:
