Take Entry Level to the Next Level

In tradition of providing unique and high quality professional development opportunities, NASPA Region I is proud to off the New Professional Mentoring Institute (NPMI).

The NPMI was launched in the fall of 2008 as a means to provide new full-time professionals in their first two (2) years in the profession instructional sessions co-facilitated by seasoned student affairs administrators and faculty as well as mentorship from a mid-level professional.

Specific goals for the New Professional Mentoring Institute are:

  • Provide opportunities for new professionals to network within the region with peers.
  • Provide participants with professional development opportunities that go beyond topics traditionally covered in higher education/student affairs programs.
  • Mentoring with Mid-level student affairs professional who has completed the NASPA Mid-Level Institute, or who has demonstrated a significant professional commitment to the field of student affairs.
  • Participants will be provided with purposeful opportunities for personal goal setting and self-reflection.

The program takes place over the course of four sessions which run from January to June.  Each session is designed in two parts, a morning presentation following by one on one mentoring with a mid-level or Senior Student Affairs Officer.

Past topics include:

  • Creating the Mentoring Relationship
  • Appreciation for Professionalism
  • Understanding and Appreciation of Campus Climate
  • Understanding Campus Traditions
  • Getting the Most from your Supervisor

Participant Feedback

"I liked the diversity of the topics and speakers – from mentorship, to supervisors, to taking the next step, to traditions – they were really four unique topics that connected to each other but were separate from each other enough to make each of them individual experiences."

"Leaving each session, I felt rejuvenated and reenergized with ideas or thoughts to consider and bring with me to my institution or to my own 'tool box.'"

"The size of the group was perfect. The small number of participants gave us the opportunity to get to know more people that just our own mentors."

"I enjoyed the one-on-one conversations and the opportunities that meeting professionals in our area provided."

"Throughout the institute, I felt I gained confidence in asking for more responsibilities and challenges in my current position. I was more prepared to have conversations about my future at my institution and my profession overall. "

"The information given by the presenters was very informative. Each presenter did a fantastic job in relating their presentation to the theme of the day. I really enjoyed the interactive feel that each presentation had."
