Spring 2010

Hello, Region III members!  I hope that April has started well for you.

It is an honor to serve as your NASPA Region III Vice President, and I hope to be able to continue the excellent leadership to which you have become accustomed.  We all owe past-RVP III Tom Shandley our thanks.

Your new NASPA Region III board has been appointed and is ready to roll! The names and contact information for all of the board members are on this website.  Secretary-Treasurer Jeanine Ward-Roof plans to add pictures to this roster soon.

Here are five quick update items for you:

  1.  Last week, I had the opportunity to represent Region III at the NASPA Gulf Region conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where approximately 200 student affairs employees from across the Middle East gathered.  Although I gave the keynote speech, "Sharing Student Affairs Experiences," there is no question that I learned much more than I taught on this trip. NASPA Region III is indebted to Dr. Denise Gifford for her continued leadership of this effort.
  2. Discussion continues about ACPA/NASPA unification. You can keep up with the latest on that.  We will have updates and in depth discussion on this topic at the Region III Summer Symposium, June 13-16.
  3. The summer symposium 2010 planning committee, led by Allison Crume, has confirmed all major speakers a, and is in the process of selecting program presenters for the sessions.  Please register today for this conference in Florida.  If you are a voting delegate and you cannot come to the symposium, please make sure that you send a representative in your place.
  4. Becky Spurlock says it is not too late to submit nominations for NASPA Region III awards! Submit your deserving colleagues.
  5. Jenni Brian, Region III Information Technology Coordinator, has surveyed our membership and has begun improvements to the Region III website. If you have specific ideas about how to better utilize technology in Region III, please email Jenni.

See you at Ponte Vedra Beach on June 13!

2010 NASPA NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The national conference in Chicago was a great success, and we are all indebted to those who planned it!  The speakers were excellent, the sessions were informative, and the business meetings were well-run and well-attended.

As your new Region III VP, I encourage you to do these four things for NASPA in the next few weeks:

1. Thank Tom Shandley - Please join me in thanking Tom Shandley, Vice President for Student Affairs at Davidson College, for his great service to all of us as Region III Vice President for the past two years. It is a blessing to be following someone who has done such a good job with this position.

2. Register for the NASPA Region III Summer Symposium 2010 - Your presence is requested in Jacksonville, Florida on June 13-16 where graduate students, new professionals, mid-level professionals, senior student affairs officers and faculty will share "Reflections on Our Practices." The Call for Programs and the Online Registration is on the Region III website and here.

3. Join the ACPA/NASPA Consolidation Discussion - Use this link to review the many considerations involved with this important issue.http://www.naspa.org/unification/default.cfm

Join the discussion online via the link, by writing to me, and in person with your colleagues at the Summer Symposium in June.

4. Review the Proposed Student Affairs Professional Competency Areas - Read the report of this joint ACPA/NASPA task force, and offer your feedback through the blog that has been established just for this purpose. http://www.naspa.org/programs/profdev/default.cfm

I look forward to serving Region III and hope that you will call on me and other Region III board members whenever needed.  Our contact information is listed on the NASPA Region III website.
