Please consider nominating one of your Region IV-East colleagues for this prestigious recognition. All nominations are to be electronically submitted through the NASPA awards website. Nominations must be received by September 15, 2011.

Regional Awards Nomination Process

Regional and National Award Nominations are accepted through the NASPA Awards website.

A complete nomination must include:

  • Nomination Letter
  • Nominee's Contact Information
  • Nominee's Resume/C.V.
  • Two to five letters of support

Please note, all materials must be submitted at one time including all letters of support.

Deadline for regional awards nominations is September 15, 2011.

Celebration of Diversity Award

The Celebration of Diversity Award is a special recognition given to a college or university in NASPA Region IV-E. The award is presented based on an institution’s successful record of achievement in celebrating and creating a campus environment that is culturally diverse and accepting of differences through student development programming, personnel practices, equal opportunity, staff development activities, student support services, and actions designed to improve the campus climate for diversity. Cultural diversity includes issues related to race, color, ethnicity, creed, gender, sexual orientation, and/or disability. A complete nomination will include:

  • Letter of nomination from a staff member from any NASPA Region IV-E member institution
  • An additional letter of support from the president/chancellor of the nominated institution
  • Evidence of meeting the defined criteria for the award, this may come in the form of descriptive material, testimonials, evaluations, assessments, and/or any other documentation
  • One to four letters of support

Please note: Once a nomination is received for the Celebration of Diversity Award, the Awards committee may contact the nominator by telephone for names of persons from his/her respective campus community to gain additional supportive testimony. The award recipient(s) may be invited to present the selected program at regional conference.

Community College Professional Award

This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to NASPA and/or the profession. Student Affairs professionals in all positions are eligible for this award. The individual nominated must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated an active involvement with the profession, NASPA, and Community College research, policies, or practice at the regional level
  • Contrbiuted to creating a campus environment that promotes student learning and personal development
  • Outstanding individual contribution in innovative and responsive services and programs that address varied emerging needs of students
  • A minimum of five years of experience in student affairs
  • Be a current NASPA member within the region or have retired from the region

The recipient of this award will be submitted as the Region IV-E candidate for the National Community College Professional Award.

Distinguished Service to the Profession

This award is presented to an individual to recognize outstanding achievement to the profession over an extended period of time. Criteria include:

  • Leadership and Service to NASPA at the regional or national level
  • Contribution above and beyond normal service required by positions of leadership
  • A minimum of 10 years in the college student personnel profession and as a NASPA member

In addition to regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will be considered for the national NASPA Fred Turner Distinguished Service Award.

Graduate Student Rising Star Award

Nominees for this award must be students pursuing a masters or doctoral degree related to student affairs with the intent to pursue a career in student affairs. Preference will be given to students who also have an internship/cooperative experience in a student affairs department. Criteria include:

  • Excellence in the classroom
  • Leadership and innovation in the internship/cooperative experience
  • Potential for significant contributions to the student affairs profession

The awards committee may choose to present an award to a masters and a doctoral student if they choose.

Innovative Program Award

Innovative programs are defined as ideas, methods, or programs that result in improved educational activities, services or management for a college or university community. These programs or activities must be, at minimum, three years old, and, at maximum, five years old. Innovative programs:

  • Encourage divers and/or multiple subgroups to participate
  • Address a demonstrated need on campus
  • Are adaptable to other institutions
  • Contain an evaluation component
  • Demonstrate financial creativity or cost effectiveness
  • Involved collaboration with other college or university departments
  • Enhance student learning

A complete nomination will include:

  • A description (1-2 pages) of the program and its benefits to students and the institution
  • A letter of nomination from any staff member of any NASPA IV-E member institution, the letter must name the principal professional(s) responsible for the program
  • Two additional letters of support
  • Evidence of meeting the defined criteria for the award

In addition to being recognized at the regional level, recipients will also be introduced at the national conference awards luncheon.

Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award

Student Affairs professionals with a minimum of five years experience are eligible for the NASPA Region IV-E Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award. The individual nominated must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated outstanding commitment to the profession and NASPA at the regional level
  • Contributed to creating a campus environment that promotes student learning and personal development
  • Outstanding individual contribution to innovative and responsive services and programs that address varied and emerging needs of students
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in student affairs

In addition to the regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will be considered for the national NASPA Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award.

Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education

This award is reserved for one who has rendered services in programs, policies, and research that has made a national impact; and who has contributed to the broad reach of higher education. Recipients do not have to be current members of NASPA but should have made contributions that have benefited student affairs or higher education. Current national NASPA board members are not eligible for this award.

In addition to regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will be considered for the national Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education Award.

Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs through Teaching

An outstanding college student personnel preparation faculty member in Region IV-E is selected annually through nominations. Criteria include:

  • Contribution to the profession through the development of professionals
  • Contribution to the profession through research and presentation
  • Contribution to the profession through active involvement with professional organization(s)

In addition to regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will be considered for the national NASPA Robert H. Shaffer Award for an Outstanding Faculty Member.

Outstanding New Professional Award

A professional with no more than three years full-time experience in student affairs is selected based on the following criteria:

  • Outstanding service to their institution
  • Innovation or creative efforts within their institution
  • Active involvement in NASPA and/or other professional organizations
  • No more than three years full-time experience

Outstanding Performance as a Senior Student Affairs Officer

One of the region’s most prestigious awards, this recognition is presented to an individual who has excelled as a dean in student affairs profession. Criteria include:

  • Sustained professional service in the area of student personnel work
  • High level competency in administrative skills
  • Merited stature among and support of students, faculty, and fellow administrators on their campus
  • Effectiveness in the development of junior staff members
  • Significant contributions to the field through publications and professional involvement
  • Leadership in university and community affairs

In addition to the regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will be considered for the national Scott Goodnight Award.

Outstanding Service to NASPA IV-E

This award is presented to an individual demonstrating outstanding achievement to the student affairs profession and Region IV-East over an extended period of time. Criteria include:

  • Service to an institution of higher education in Region IV-E
  • Leadership and service to NASPA at the state or regional level
  • Successful implementation of model innovations in the field of student affairs
  • Exemplary record of service as a mentor for students and new professionals
  • A minimum of 15 years in the college student personnel profession and as a NASPA member.

The President's Award

This award is presented as special recognition to a college or university president in the NASPA IV-East region who has enhanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting student affairs staff and student programs and services. Nominees must have a strong record of improving the quality of improving the student experience on his/her campus, involving students and staff in university decision-making, and making valuable contributions to our profession beyond an individual campus.

In addition to the regional recognition that accompanies this award, the recipient will also be considered for the NASPA President’s Award.

Undergraduate Student Rising Star Award

Nominees for this award must be undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career or advanced degree in student affairs. Criteria include:

  • Involvement in campus activities and organizations
  • Has made significant contributions through leadership on their campus
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program with junior or senior status
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Intention to pursue a career or advanced degree in the filed of student affairs

Special NASPA IV-E Recognition

Every year the NASPA IV-E Regional Awards Committee also recognizes retiring members of the region at the regional conference. The following is a description about how to nominate these individuals for recognition.

Retiring Region IV-E College Student Personnel Professional Preparation Faculty Members

An anecdotal letter of nomination and a current curriculum vitae of the retiring college student personnel faculty member must be submitted to the committee.

Retiring Region IV-E Senior Student Affairs Officers

An anecdotal letter of nomination and an up to date curriculum vitae of the retiring senior student affairs officer must be submitted to the committee.

Retiring Region IV-E Student Affairs Staff Member Who Is Not a Senior Student Affairs Officer

Student Affairs staff members who have not served in the senior student affairs officer role and who have been key contributors to the profession will be honored based on a letter of support submitted outlining the contributions made at the campus, regional and/or national level.
