Assessment Reconsidered: Institutional Effectiveness for Student Success

Richard P. Keeling, Andrew F. Wall, Ric Underhile, Gwendolyn J. Dungy
2008, ICSSIA
114 pages

Making meaning of how, what, when, and where students learn is a vital, exciting, and inspiring component of higher education. Increasing external demands for accountability and internal commitments to improvement are amplifying the need for comprehensive assessment practices. Assessment Reconsidered: Institutional Effectiveness for Student Success promotes the shared ownership of assessment planning among faculty, student affairs educators, administrators, and students. As a project of the International Center for Student Success and Institutional Accountability (ICSSIA), Assessment Reconsidered focuses on the collaborative use of all campus resources in promoting student success. Call to Action

This morning's Washington Post noted, "[T]oday it is 4/16 again, bringing an unwanted milestone that is reopening the wounds that so many students, parents, faculty members and others have struggled to close." Despite the sadness in commemorating the anniversaries of the tragic events that have wracked too many of our campuses recently, we remain optimistic about what can be done to stem this tide of violence. In her closing keynote speech at the 2008 NASPA Annual Conference, Virginia Tech Vice President for Student Affairs Zenobia Hikes issued a "Call to Action" to our profession. In her call, she posed the question: "What must we do?" She urged us to "act with fierce urgency," to collaborate, and to "play a role in reinventing America outside of the university." As NASPA leadership looks at ways for our association to respond to Hikes' "Call to Action," please keep alert to announcements and calls for your help and involvement.
