Five reasons to bring #NASPACPE to your campus

Civic Engagement
August 20, 2015 JM Alatis NASPA

As preposterous as it may sound, one of my favorite times of the year is the “back to school” season. The energy that exists on campuses surrounding the impending student return is contagious and further emphasizes why I do the work that I do. While I have moved off of campus and into a professional role with NASPA, I consider myself lucky to have a career that allows me to have intensive student contact on almost a weekly basis. Through NASPA and the BACCHUS Initiatives Certified Peer Educator Program, I travel around the country to various campuses to certify peer educators and student leaders through NASPA’s innovative and interactive 12 hour certification course. While I could speak on CPE for ages (read above: it’s a 12 hour course!), the TOP 5 REASONS to bring #NASPACPE to your campus are below!

1. It’s comprehensive in its offerings.

The Certified Peer Educator training is really nine different trainings in one, and focuses on areas that are relevant to both members of peer education groups and to student leaders on campuses in general. These modules help students hone their skills.

  • Understanding the role peers have in educating others
  • Developing strategies to combat high-risk behaviors amongst their peer group
  • Appropriate “listening” skills when working with others
  • Knowing when and how to respond – and when to make appropriate referrals
  • Knowing when to be an active bystander and utilizing other intervention skills
  • Acting through a Socially Just and inclusive lens
  • Successful programming and presentation skills
  • Enhancing their self-care as a student and as a leader
  • How to manage and work within a group or team

Each of these sessions could stand alone as successful training or in-service for your student leaders, yet the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA have combine them to provide a holistic training for your campus. Click here for a more in-depth look at the modules.

2. It’s applicable to campus leaders of all types.

The CPE Program not only applies to the roles of peer education groups on campuses. Really any campus population can benefit from the program – including but not limited to resident assistants, orientation leaders, student organization leaders, and student government officers, to name a few. We want to bring training that is relevant to your institution, so NASPA and BACCHUS are willing to help determine what is best for your campus – whether through CPE or the custom-built trainings that we offer.

3. Students join the ranks of 100,000 of their peers

CPE launched as an initiative of the BACCHUS Network in 1994. Since then, thousands of peer educators have been certified around the United States – and the world. The word of peer education has spread amongst college campuses, and a recent National Peer Educator Study (NPES) reports that students who have gone through the CPE Program: Taught new information (83 percent), changed an attitude of someone else (69 percent), and caused a positive behavior change of someone else (63 percent). In addition, nearly 1 in every 4 peer educators say that their work as a CPE-certified individual has caused a change that resulted in saving a life.

4. It pairs with other great NASPA Offerings

Being a Certified Peer Educator will provide connection with NASPA for your students. In a profession that recruits internally, the peer educators of today could very well be the student affairs professionals of tomorrow. This connection with NASPA can – and should – inspire students to consider a career in Student Affairs. Whether it would be attending a NASPA Event like the Undergraduate Student Pre-Conference in conjunction with our Annual Conference, becoming a Fellow in the NUFP Program or Undergraduate Student Member, or attending the annual NASPA Peer Educator Conference (General Assembly) – the opportunities for students who go through CPE to get further involved are endless.

5. You can reinvigorate YOUR connection with NASPA

In addition to providing opportunities for students to get involved in NASPA, bringing a NASPA staff member to your campus can help renew your own campus’s involvement with the organization. Not only do we provide exclusive member-pricing for Institutional Members who bring a facilitator to training, we also offer discounts on other materials through the BACCHUS Network Store for NASPA Institutions. NASPA’s vision is to be the leading voice for the student affairs profession worldwide – and we are happy and excited to be able to move towards this mission through our staff members’ on-campus work with our members.

Our NASPA and BACCHUS Initiatives staff members are ready to come to campus to work with your student leaders. We’d love to explore how CPE or our other training and consulting can help your campus thrive! For more information on CPE and NASPA trainings, or to book your training for the fall, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail. We look forward to working with you soon!
