Recognizing Excellence in Student Affairs

July 18, 2016 Melissa Shehane, Ph.D.

What is excellence in our profession? There are countless excellent programs and initiatives taking place on campuses across the country, many of which go unrecognized. It’s easy for us as student affairs professionals to get caught up doing “the work” and forgetting to take the time to showcase the real impact we are making on our campuses. Recognition is important, of course, but even more critical is the opportunity to share the solutions we have developed on our own campus so that our colleagues on other campuses can discover innovative ways to serve their own students.

NASPA is not only our professional home, but also a place where excellence and innovation are recognized. The NASPA Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to showcase a successful program or initiative in one of eleven categories crucial to the success of students and the continued growth of the student affairs profession. By nominating a program for the 2016-2017 NASPA Excellence Awards, you are educating others about the work taking place on your campus, and sharing valuable knowledge that can improve and enrich the experiences of students everywhere.

Student affairs professionals are tasked with solving difficult issues, creating valuable change, and shaping tomorrow’s leaders. Our students, our future leaders, will be charged with solving the complex problems our society is facing. The work we do with them today matters, and we should acknowledge ourselves and our colleagues for the excellence we bring to student learning and development.

The 2017 NASPA Annual Conference in San Antonio is our time to share how our programs and services are excellent. It’s time to showcase our BIG ideas, explain how we are addressing BIG challenges, and demonstrate through assessment the BIG opportunities that make our profession one of a kind.  Nominate your excellent programs and services for recognition in San Antonio! Applying is simple – just follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Identify the program or service you want to nominate and start the application.

Step 2: Use the rubric as your guide to complete the application.

Step 3: Secure your letter/s of support.

Step 4: Proofread your submission and submit.

Applications are due on November 1, 2016 through the NASPA website
