September’s #SAMoment – Traditions

Student Success
September 9, 2015 Danny Anzueto NASPA

It’s hard to believe that it is already September and that classes are in full swing for most campuses across the country! September was always a favorite time for me on campus because it was still early in the year and full of exciting new experiences but you could also feel that the tension of the first few weeks had faded and students were beginning to settle into their groove. It was also an exciting time on campus because you could see some of the traditions students learned during orientation being used in day-to-day life!

During my undergraduate careers, I had the fantastic opportunity to serve as a campus orientation leader at Florida International University (a.k.a. Peer Advisors ’06-’08-‘10) and loved training out incoming students about our campus traditions. My favorite campus tradition is connected to the University Seal that is located on each of FIU’s campuses.

The tradition states that if you step on the seal, you will delay your graduation for years. The only way to counter-act the effect would be to walk around the seal four times, backwards. The number of times I saw students lunge to stop others from stepping on the seal or jump over the seal when they weren’t paying attention and almost stepped on it made me realize that we had done our job as PAs!

Campus traditions offer a view into the history of the campus and the quirkiness of what we value about our experience on campus. This year NASPA is starting a tradition of having our guests at the NASPA headquarters take a picture in front of our NASPA logo. For the month of September we will honor your campus traditions by highlighting them on the NASPA Blog. Please share some photos of your campus traditions on your social media platforms using #SAMoment and #SATraditions.
