Home for the Holidays: Help Homeless and Foster Youth during Academic Breaks

Socioeconomic and Class Issues in Higher Education
November 9, 2015

NAECHY Legislative Alert

NAEHCY is pleased to announce the launch of the 2015 Home for the Holidays campaign.

Together with our partners, Covenant House, the National Center on Housing and Child Welfare, and the National Network for Youth, we hope to raise awareness and inspire action to help homeless and foster youth during academic breaks.

Most students experiencing homelessness and students from foster care don’t have families to return to during academic breaks. Instead of enjoying the warmth of home and family, they scramble for a place to stay, often hiding their situation due to embarrassment. The fear of homelessness during breaks creates tremendous stress, preventing students from focusing on schoolwork.

  • Take action! This flyer highlights five ways to help.
  • Learn more by reading these examples of campus initiatives to house homeless and foster youth during breaks.
  • We’d love to hear from you: what is your community doing to help homeless and foster youth during breaks?  Please take our online survey and let us know!

From now through December 21, we’ll be sharing more information and inviting our members to share what they are doing in their community.

Join the conversation using #HomelessHolidayBreak and spread the word!
