NASPA Seeks Editor for the Journal of Technology in Higher Education

NASPA–Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education invites applications and nominations for the editorship of the Journal of Technology in Higher Education (JTHE). The official term ends March 2021 with potential for renewal.

Scope of JTHE: JTHE is a professional journal that examines the influence of technology on the college and university environment as a whole for students, student affairs professionals, faculty, and the campus community at large. The journal seeks to provide high-quality articles on research and practice in a manner that is sensitive to the ever changing nature of technology. The journal publishes scholarly articles and applied research on issues related to:

• Exploring technology’s impact on and relationship with student and professional development, behavior, values, and decision making.
• Identifying and supporting technology’s role in providing student services and developmental programming.
• Informing the profession about new research and practices regarding the development and use of technology as a tool for the business of higher education.
• Expanding and furthering the discussion of technology in higher education to include technology’s impact on and relationship with the changing social, political, and cultural landscape.

Published twice a year, JTHE encourages the submission of manuscripts from faculty in a variety of academic disciplines, student affairs professionals, information technology professionals, and more. JTHE is published by NASPA, the foremost professional association for student affairs administrators, faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students, in collaboration with Taylor and Francis.

Qualification and requirements of candidates: The editor position is a substantial professional service commitment requiring the experience and judgment of a senior scholar. Key qualities sought for the position of editor include: an established record of scholarship in the field of student affairs and higher education; managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle and meet deadlines; methodological and scholarly expertise to assure the publication of high-quality manuscripts; and the ability to attract respected experts to the editorial board. Applicants should have recognized expertise in the field, possess editorial experience, and be able to lead an active editorial board in working effectively with publishing professionals. It is expected that the editor be a member of NASPA.

Major responsibilities of the editor of JTHE include the following:

• Provide a clear vision and direction for the journal.
• Actively promote JTHE at academic and student affairs professional conferences.
• Develop journal-sponsored activities that promote scholarly writing, manuscript submissions, and student affairs related research.
• Supervise an editorial assistant, who manages the peer review process of manuscripts through an online system.
• Solicit high-quality manuscripts from new and experienced authors, and assist these authors to see their manuscripts through to publication.
• Select, train, and supervise a sufficient pool of competent reviewers who reach conclusions and make decisions on manuscripts in a timely fashion.
• Identify and appoint qualified members to the editorial board.

Search procedure: Applicants will be reviewed by the Search Committee immediately after the deadline submission date.

The application packet should be no more than 5 pages and include:

• A Vision Statement: Set forth your goals and plans for the content of the journal. This may include an assessment of the current strengths, weaknesses, or gaps that you plan to address and how you will implement your plan. You may present a list of articles that have been published in other journals that you believe represent your vision of JTHE. Also, provide an outline of how you plan to reach your target author community and how you will attract their papers.
• Editor Background Information: Your name, affiliation, and other relevant information. Describe the qualifications that support your application. Provide evidence of your ability and experience to provide sound judgment and guidance to potential authors. Please include a vita. Vitae are not included in the five-page limit, and no standard form is required.
• Institutional Support: It is important for candidates to consider and address the feasibility of serving as co-editor in light of the resources likely to be available to the applicant. NASPA does not pay for office space, clerical assistance, or release time, but can provide basic financial support for office resources as necessary to journal editors. This support may include funds for office supplies, postage, and telephone beyond what is provided by the editor's home institution. Since the support offered by different institutions varies widely, you are encouraged to contact the Executive Office of your institution as necessary in order to ensure the feasibility of your application.
