NCC Online - Careers in Student Affairs Month

October 6, 2016

Careers in Student Affairs Month (CSAM) is in full swing with a variety of webinars, discussions and Live Briefings being offered throughout the month of October, dedicated to the celebration and awareness of our profession. Of course, this month would not be complete without special insight into the work we do at community colleges. Community colleges serve a valuable role in the general community and education system; they provide opportunities to thousands of students every year through affordable access to higher education and job training. In fact, according to the American Association of Community Colleges, over 7 million undergraduate students attend community colleges, making up nearly half of the entire undergraduate population in the country. Still, there seems to be an enigma surrounding these institutions. Open enrollment means having very diverse student populations with differing needs, and resources and procedures are many times dictated by state mandates.

Student affairs work at community colleges, however, is extremely rewarding and incredibly important. There are countless ways to help students grow and develop, whether it's introducing them to their leadership potential through campus activities or providing support for transfer through counseling and advising services. NASPA's Community College Division (CCD) wants to spread awareness about these very opportunities through our upcoming CSAM Live Briefing. Three panelists share their experience about why they choose to work at community colleges, the benefits and challenges they encounter, and advice for others about how to advance within community college systems. Joining us this year are:

  • Amanda Turner, Dean of Enrollment Services at Triton College | Panelist
  • Shane Long, Director of Residence Life & Student Involvement at Southern Maine Community College | Panelist
  • Lisa Matye Edwards, Vice President of Student Affairs at Arapahoe Community College | Panelist
  • Diana Doyle, President of Arapahoe Community College | Moderator

This year's event will take place on Wednesday, October 19th from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (ET). To register for the event, sign up here. We look forward to seeing you there!
