BACCHUS Regional Spring Conference Wrap-Up

Each spring, BACCHUS peer education groups gather at the regional level to learn, network, and have fun. Here are the highlights.

Region I – Harvard University, April 3

The first spring conference of the season had 215 peer educators and advisors coming to this Sunday drive-in conference at Harvard University. Special thanks to Elise Korte and Michelle Mandino, co-advisors to the Drug & Alcohol Peer Advisors (DAPAs) at Harvard University's Office of Alcohol & Other Drug Services for hosting!

Total Attendees: 215

Award Winners:

Region II - University of California Pennsylvania, April 15 - 16

The conference featured one keynote speaker and ten breakout sessions on a variety of topic areas including sexual health, mental health, sexual assault and violence prevention, nutrition and fitness, alcohol and other drugs, leadership development, and stress management.

Region III – University of Virginia, April 15 - 17

The BACCHUS Region III team partnered with Virginia ABC College Tour to put on this event. The weekend kicked off with a “Dive In Movie,” featuring Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film appeared on a large screen while watchers lounged in the warm-water pool and hot tub. The keynote speaker, Toren Volkmann, did a program titled “Binge to Blackout” and talked about binge drinking in college and his own recovery process. The conference offered 23 breakout session options over four breakout session blocks and had a “mindfulness break” where participants chose among yoga, a guided meditation, or a walking meditation. The main day ended with student and advisor roundtable discussions.

Region IV-East – Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), April 15 - 16

This conference had a total of 24 breakout sessions presented by regional peer education groups. The conference theme was “What’s Trending? #PeerEducation,” and during conference we had over 60 tweets with just that one hashtag!

Region IV-West – Meeting of the Minds in Kansas City, Missouri, April 7 - 9

Meeting of the Minds is a regional prevention and health education conference for college and university peer educators, their advisors, administrators, and campus and community law enforcement.

This was the first year that the Meeting of the Minds Conference included schools from Region IV-W, as it was formerly the Area 5 conference for BACCHUS. This year, we had friends and colleagues from Colorado and Arkansas join us for this event.  We were very excited to be joined by two new state coordinators to Region IV-W - veteran state coordinator Mary Wyandt-Hiebert from Arkansas and new state coordinator Jessica Gargus from Missouri.

Regions V & VI – Special Certified Peer Educator Training Pilot – Cal Poly Pomona, April 8 - 10

This year, we combined Regions V and VI into a special preview of our updated Certified Peer Educator (CPE) training. NASPA Training Coordinator JM Alatis led participants through the 12-hour training, debuting updated curriculum and new video scenarios, and was assisted by outgoing SAC member Amaka Uche to help lead the students in various teambuilding exercises. The new CPE Training provides a foundation for peer educators, RAs, and other student leaders to be more effective in their roles, regardless of topic area. Special thanks to Fernando Diaz and Cathy Nguyen for their assistance in organizing the pilot!

Hosting a conference can provide tremendous exposure and relationship building for your campus. Some of our peer educators may want to attend graduate school or host other events on your campus. The application for campuses to host the BACCHUS regional spring conferences is available here.
