Coming this Summer: The new #NASPAcpe

May 26, 2016 JM Alatis NASPA

For the first time since 2008, the landmark Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Program, powered by the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA, will be relaunched with an updated curriculum. This curriculum is the culmination of great work of NASPA Staff Members, NASPA Volunteers, and lifelong allies of the BACCHUS Initiatives. We are excited to preview what’s new with CPE, a special discount on CPE Fall Trainings, and the launch of a new Train-the-Trainer Program!

What’s New?CPE Training

The new CPE Program includes great opportunities to grow your peer education network on campus. Whether you are training new health and wellness peer educators, resident assistants, orientation leaders, or other students in leadership positions on campus. The training course is consists of eight base modules of content - some with similar content from prior versions, some with new content to enhance the training. These modules include:

  1. Understanding the Power, Roles, and Characteristics of Quality Peer Educators
  2. Affecting and Understanding “Change Making” as a Peer Educator
  3. Being an Effective Listener as a Peer Educator
  4. A Peer Educator’s Role in Responding to Crisis
  5. Bystander Intervention as a Peer Education Technique
  6. Intrapersonal Applications of Identity as a Peer Educator
  7. Putting the “Educator” in Peer Education
  8. Group Development and Moving Forward

What’s Improved?

Everything! Any course content has a certain shelf life, and we have taken steps to bring CPE into the present. Plus, with our technology platforms, we will be able to be more nimble and create updates quicker, without having to reconstruct everything. Other improvements include:

  • Updated videos – We conducted a complete refresh of scenarios to help demonstrate key concepts in CPE.
  • Expanded topics – We recognize that student leaders have many different functions on campus. Though not “topic-specific,” the CPE content will be beneficial to all types of student leaders and peer educators.
  • Online home for facilitator materials – If you have been frustrated by the current CPE DVD, you are not alone. Now, the facilitator slides, videos, and materials will be accessible through the NASPA online learning system (on the cloud).
  • Optional “deeper dive” modules – Throughout the academic year, NASPA will be launching additional modules that supplement the main training curriculum. Some modules planned for release include motivational interviewing, being a peer educator in a technological world, and interpersonal identity development.
