In the Wake of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile & the Dallas Protests
July 14, 2016
Many higher education leaders are struggling with how to respond with authenticity to the growing number of incidents that impact various members and populations in our communities. We, the NASPA Region V Leadership, are no different in that we are trying to figure out our role in responding to and even perhaps filling a void that may exist.
We believe business as usual is not business as usual. It must include a heartfelt focus on each other and our community. How do we model to our students a better world, a better way of communicating, and participating in constructive and civil dialogue? We must acknowledge the dissonance, listen to the pain, and help figure out what it means to TAKE ACTION - in a deeply engaged manner.
Below are a number of tools for folks to use. The resources run the gamut. There are sites, theories, reflective articles, and contacts. We hope this helps but we know that the work doesn’t stop here. No matter if the tools are provided or not, we should strive for self-education so that we can be better- so we can do better by each other.
