NASPA IV-WE… That’s a wrap!

December 3, 2016 Jim Hoppe Shana Warkentine Meyer

The Region IV-WE conference is now in the history books.  Four years of planning by teams from across the Midwest led to an engaging and exhilarating gathering of over 740 registrants.  We were informed by engaging sessions, inspired by our keynote speakers and entertained by hilarious one-liners.  In the words of Steve Martin, “Some people just have a way with words, and other people … oh … not have way.”

Bertice Berry was a fitting opening to our gathering, reminding us that the only people we can change are ourselves, but that change lets us become a light for others to follow.  In her words, “Even the hardship gives you the opportunity to be better than you were before,” and “Flizzzza!”  Elizabeth Acevedo inspired us by telling us “our lives move forward every time we give back” and encouraging us to tell our stories.

Countless colleagues were recognized for their work in the field, over 100 sessions helped to inform and engage; and we built new networks with conference exhibitors and friends from across two regions.

As NASPA president Dr. Kevin Krueger reminded us in our closing session, our work is more important now than ever, with Pell Grants, year-round Pell, Trio Programs, Title IX, and Gender Identity policy concerns at the forefront.  Board Chair, Dr. Lori White called on us to reflect, rejuvenate, rededicate, and reconcile our differences in the months and years ahead.  This IS our time.

Our gathering in ST. Louis reminded us that we are indeed the heart of it all.  Take care of each other, nurture each other, and always remember that our work with students is essential and life changing.
