2018 NASPA Community Colleges Institute:
Pathways to Success

The CCI is a pre-conference workshop that allows staff and faculty to learn from and engage with one another on a variety of critical issues affecting student affairs professionals in the community college setting. For our 2018 Institute in Philadelphia, we will be focusing on pathways to success. With the continued focused on student success and completion, community colleges are uniquely positioned to lead this charge. The planning committee encourages you to join us as we explore the various pathways to success for our students. 

Registration FAQ

Registration to the annual conference is not required to attend the Institute. To attend the Institute, you will be able to register for the pre-conference event via this link through the annual conference website. Once there, you will see the option to register for the CCI as a standalone or alongside an annual conference registration. 

Continuing Education

NASPA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5120. Programs that do not quality for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NASPA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

    Call for Programs

    The call for programs deadline has been extended until September 25, 2017.

    The institute content advisory committee seeks proposals that effectively advance the field of student affairs in work in the community college arena. Additionally, the institute content advisory committee will select programs based upon the programs' relationships to the institute learning outcomes and themes. 

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Participants will be able to:

    • Articulate the issues, trends, and evidence-based practices in student affairs at community colleges including student learning and development; workforce development and community engagement; globalism; social justice; organizational and human resources; technology; and compliance and policy development;
    • Identify unique and innovative ways to advance the field and work of community college student affairs professionals;
    • Construct decision-making and planning processes based on data and evidence-based research;
    • Become familiar with the Professional Competencies for Student Affairs Educators and how these competencies apply to their daily work on community college campuses; and
    • Become familiar with institution-wide models that integrate guided academic and career pathways.
    • Understand the four essential practices of guided pathways models to include: clarifying paths to student end goals, helping students choose to enter a pathway, helping students to stay on a pathway, and ensuring students are learning.

    Conference Themes & Suggested Topics

    • Pathways to Success

      ​The main theme of the 2018 CCI is "Pathways to Success." This theme is broad and can relate to a number of mechanisms that support student success, whether that means matriculation, degree attainment, or transfering to a 4-year institution.

    • Cross-Campus Collaboration

      This theme serves to explore ways community college professionals are working together within our individual institutional structures for strengthening our support of students. In addition, we hope to explore ways to develop and define cross-campus collaborative opportunities for shared success.

    • Student Support

      ​This theme serves to explore ways community colleges are preparing students for the future of higher education through community college education. In addition, this theme serves to examine ways community college professionals can plan to work with increasingly diverse student populations.

    • Community Colleges and the Future

      ​This theme serves to investigate where community colleges fit into the future of higher education? What role do community colleges play in the advancement of higher education and what are the unique advantages and challenges faced by these institutions.

    The Pennsylvania Convention Center and surrounding hotels will be the primary location for sessions and events for the 2018 NASPA Annual Conference.
