Greetings from the Conference Chair

Welcome to the 2019 Region I Conference Website!

The regional conference has always been a place to come together to learn from one another, reconnect with colleagues and friends, create new relationships, celebrate achievements, and highlight the outstanding work that we are accomplishing as a region.

The beautiful city of Providence, Rhode Island will be once again the backdrop for our time together. I hope you take advantage of all the conference has to offer, but also take time to explore the city known as the “Creative Capital" to enjoy its abundant educational resources and vibrant arts community.

As we grow as a region, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to engage our members. My team and I will continue the tradition of providing quality programming that will inspire you, energize you, and motivate you to create positive and impactful change on your campuses.

Our regional conference is located on the ancestral territory of the Narragansett and Wampanoag people. As part of NASPA's efforts to enact social justice and inclusive practives, this acknowledgement serves as reminder that before the conference site was settled, it has been long occupied by people who have a distict linguistic, cultural, and historical connection to this location.

Speakers

We are delighted to have such phenomenal opening and closing speakers this year. Mariah Parker is an artist, activistist, and politician who is currently the Athens-Clarke County Commissioner. Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation) is a Native scholar, writer, blogger, and activist, and is passionate about reframing how the world sees contemporary Native cultures.

Aside from our regional signature events, we are excited to bring two new sessions to our pre-conference options. Please note that SALT and UBUNTU have an application process in order to participate. You can register to attend the SSAO institute and other pre-conference sessions through the conference registration process.

The Student Affairs Leaders of Tomorrow (SALT) conference is designed to help undergraduate students explore the field of student affairs as a career path. Participants will have the opportunity to meet other student leaders who share their same interests, discover the variety of functional areas available to them, meet professionals in the field who will provide guidance, mentorship and direction, and have a chance to learn about and meet representatives from the various graduate programs in student affairs in our region.Your $100 registration fee covers cost of SALT, meals, and a shared hotel room.

The NASPA Region I Ubuntu Institute is a leadership development opportunity designed for student affairs professionals of color. The Institute will inspire emerging professionals, ranging from graduate students through mid-level professionals, to reach their full potential and serve as a pathway to leadership within institutions and associations through a cohort based model. The goals of the institute are to aid participants in navigating the complexity of higher education as professionals of color through the lenses of strength, empowerment, resiliency & authenticity.

Career Boot Camp: Get Job Search Ready

The job search process can be intimidating and overwhelming. It's filled with constant highs and lows. So, where do you start? Do you update your resume? Sign up for a networking event? Check higheredjobs.com? You can't do everything at once but thoughtful planning and seeking out help is an excellent way to lessen job search frustration. Participants will be able to do the following: 1. Explore ways to assess and effectively articulate a brand that showcases unique values, skills and experience 2. Create a job search strategy 3. Receive individual resume coaching and apply constructive feedback 4. Learn from a panel of student affairs professionals about career pathways and the skills and experience looked for by hiring managers when filling positions (please note that in order to provide individualized time with participants, this session is only open to 30 members)

this session focuses on demystifying assessment in student affairs through knowledge and culture building. Guides found online often use dense language, are unnecessarily long, and have overly complex tools that are off-putting. Conference presentations often focus on a specific initiative or provide highly technical material, where my presentation will focus on making assessment work less daunting and engaging new professionals to build early competencies while encouraging growth for colleagues and the general office culture around assessment.
