The NASPA-AL Drive-In is a one-day conference that brings together Student Affairs professionals from across the state of Alabama. Our theme, Bridge the Gap! Creating meaningful professional connections, will allow us to navigate the changing landscape of higher education. Together, we will learn from one another, discuss the critical issues impacting our field, and network with new and established colleagues.
Open to everyone, from Chief Student Affairs officers, to New Professionals and Graduate Students, the NASPA-AL Drive-In will have intentional time to meet with others in your functional areas as well as learn from those who are on the cutting edge of innovative student affairs practices.
To further enhance your conference experience, New Professionals (those with less than 5 years in the field of Student Affairs) and Graduate Students are encouraged to attend the New Professionals Institute track.
The New Professional Institute will allow New Professionals and Graduate Students to have a chance to meet with seasoned student affairs professionals and learn strategies to be successful in this field.
CHIEF STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICERS
Chief Student Affairs Officers are invited to join Dr. John Jones, the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for a think-tank session during the Drive In. The meeting will be begin with lunch and will then move to structured time together.
Individuals who lead/coordinate student affairs assessment efforts for their divisions are invited to join Dr. Abby Langham, Director of Assessment & Strategic Planning at Auburn University, and Dr. Tim Salazar, Director of Student Affairs Assessment and Planning at the University of Alabama, for an afternoon think-tank session during the Drive-In. The gathering will begin with lunch and will then move to discussion time together.
Faculty are asked to perform research and service to their universities. The NASPA-AL Drive In offers a space for faculty attendees to learn to Bridge the Gap between academic and student affairs in order to improve their connections and support the academic missions of their institutions.
Each year NASPA recognizes outstanding members by honoring individual professionals with regional awards. To continue with this tradition, please consider nominating one of your colleagues in the State of Alabama. The deadline for nominations is Friday, January 18, 2018. Winners will be announced at the NASPA-AL Drive In, January 26, 2018, at The University of Alabama Birmingham in Birmingham, AL.
Future Leader Award (Undergraduate or Graduate Student)
The Future Leader Award recognizes the outstanding contributions by a student. Nominators should consider nominees that have made a significant contribution to their campus, demonstrated academic achievement, exceeded the expectations of their respective leadership positions, assumed a leadership role at their institution and demonstrated an interest in the field of student affairs, and/or higher education. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speaks to the characters of this award.
Rising Star Award (New Professional)
The Rising Star Award recognizes the outstanding contributions by a new professional in student affairs. Nominators should consider nominees that demonstrate initiative, contribute to programs that address the needs of students and institutions, create campus environments that promote student learning and personal development, and contribute work that supports the advancement of student support in higher education. Self-nominations are encouraged. This professional has worked 1-4 years in the student affairs field and has contributed in various ways to the student culture on campus. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speaks to the characters of this award.
Outstanding Contribution to Student Engagement
The purpose of this award is to recognize a professional’s work at the campus level in the area of student programs. This recipient makes contributions above and beyond the assigned duties of their position and has a significant impact on student programs at their institution. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speaks to the characters of this award.
Spirit of Diversity Award
This recipient exemplifies the spirit of diversity as it applies to a commitment and appreciation for diversity and inclusion. Additionally, the recipient has proved leadership and direction in fostering a culture of appreciation for multicultural values and the acceptance of individual and group differences. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speaks to the characteristics of this award.
Region III Outstanding Service Award
The Outstanding Service Award recipient exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism as it applies to NASPA at the state, regional or national level. The nominee should have a record of involvement in Region III, which may include active committee membership, board membership, conference presentation, or volunteer service. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence to support the characteristics of this award. NASPA membership is required for this nominee.
