The NASPA-AL Drive-In is a one-day conference that brings together Student Affairs professionals from across the state of Alabama. Together, we will learn from one another, discuss the critical issues impacting our field, and network with new and established colleagues.
Open to everyone, from Chief Student Affairs officers, to New Professionals and Graduate Students, the NASPA-AL Drive-In will have intentional time to meet with others in your functional areas as well as learn from those who are on the cutting edge of innovative student affairs practices.
To further enhance your conference experience, New Professionals (those with less than 5 years in the field of Student Affairs) and Graduate Students are encouraged to follow the New Professional Track. New Professional Track sessions will be marked in guidebook.
Faculty are asked to perform research and service to their universities. The NASPA-AL Drive In offers a space for faculty attendees to learn more about the connection between academic and student affairs in order support the academic missions of their institutions.
Each year NASPA recognizes outstanding members by honoring individual professionals with regional awards. To continue with this tradition, please consider nominating one of your colleagues in the State of Alabama. The deadline for nominations is December 3, 2018. Winners will be announced at the NASPA-AL Drive In, January 25, 2019, at The University of Alabama Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. Future Leader Award (Undergraduate or Graduate Student)
The Future Leader Award recognizes the outstanding contributions by a student. Nominators should consider nominees that have made a significant contribution to their campus, demonstrated academic achievement, exceeded the expectations of their respective leadership positions, assumed a leadership role at their institution and demonstrated an interest in the field of student affairs, and/or in higher education. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speaks to the characteristics of this award.
Rising Star Award (New Professional)
The Rising Star Award recognizes the outstanding contributions by a new professional in student affairs. Nominators should consider nominees that demonstrate initiative, contribute to programs that address the needs of students and institutions, create campus environments that promote student learning and personal development, and contribute work that supports the advancement of student support in higher education. Self-nominations are encouraged. This professional has worked 1-4 years in the student affairs field and has contributed in various ways to the student culture on campus. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speak to the characteristics of this award.
Outstanding Contribution to Student Programs
The purpose of this award is to recognize a professional’s work at the campus level in the area of student programs. This recipient makes contributions above and beyond the assigned duties of their position and has a significant impact on student programs at their institution. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less how the nominee has impacted their institution through student programs.
Spirit of Diversity Award
This recipient exemplifies the spirit of diversity as it applies to a commitment and appreciation for diversity and inclusion. Additionally, the recipient has provided leadership and direction in fostering a culture of appreciation for multicultural values and the acceptance of individual and group differences. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence that speak to the characteristics of this award.
Region III Outstanding Service Award
NASPA membership is required for this nominee. The Outstanding Service Award recipient exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism as it applies to NASPA at the state, regional or national level. The nominee should have a record of involvement in Region III, which may include active committee membership, board membership, conference presentation, or volunteer service. Nominators are to describe in 250 words or less the supporting evidence to support the characteristics of this award.
Whether you're an established professional or new to the field, you have something to share with our community. Reflect on current issues impacting our field, consider showcasing programs/initiatives that have had particular success on your campus, or simply expand on a personal or professional passion area so that others may learn from and with you during our time together.
Program proposals must be submitted no later than December 3, 2018. Proposal selections will be announced in early December.

David Arnold serves as the assistant vice president of health, safety, and well-being initiatives having joined NASPA in 2014 after 10 years working college substance abuse prevention. He has spoken at dozens of conferences regarding peer education, college substance abuse prevention, and health promotion. David administers two statewide coalitions for chronic disease and substance abuse prevention in Colorado and Montana. He also chairs the Coalition of Higher Education Associations for Substance Abuse Prevention and coordinates the NASPA Strategies Conferences focused on substance abuse prevention, sexual violence prevention, mental health, and well-being.
David Arnold serves NASPA as the assistant vice president of health, safety, and well-being initiatives, having joined the NASPA team in 2014 after 10 years working in college alcohol and other drug prevention and health promotion and work with the BACCHUS Network as the director of alcohol abuse prevention initiatives. David holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Texas, where he served as a peer educator and later a peer education advisor, receiving honors from the BACCHUS Network and American College Health Association. As a new professional, his work surrounded substance abuse prevention, the prevention of HIV infections among college students, and mental health outreach for 7 years at the University of North Texas during which time he was awarded by the University of North Texas School of Community Service and the Division of Student Development. David has spoken or presented at over 50 national, regional, state, and local conferences on collegiate substance abuse prevention, substance abuse policy development and federal compliance, campus well-being initiatives, the measurement and contribution of health programs to student success, and communication skills. David is a master trainer for the Certified Peer Educator program and directs the support of peer education initiatives provided by the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA. In his current role, David serves as the administrator of the Coalition of Colorado Campus Alcohol and Drug Educators (CADE) and the Health Colleges Montana (HCM) statewide coalitions. David serves on coalitions and committees for substance abuse prevention, the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, quality improvement in college health, and other specific well-being initiatives. He is currently the chair of the Coalition of Higher Education Associations for Substance Abuse Prevention (CoHEASAP).
