Byron McCrae

Byron P. McCrae is the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at Davidson College.  In this role, he advises the student government association and the student-run honor council. He has also mentored students through the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Undergraduate Fellows Program.

Dr. McCrae is a co-convener for the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative at Davidson College and served in a facilitation role for the NASPA institute Free Speech vs. the Inclusive Campus: An Unending Struggle? He has also visited Washington, DC twice to participate in NASPA’s Hill Day and national Student Affairs Day of Action.  Dr. McCrae has written about the weaponization of social media for a forthcoming book on college student activism, race and social media.  He has also written about campus activism for a forthcoming book on student affairs practice at small colleges.

Dr. McCrae was previously Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, Vice President and Dean of Student Life at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San Francisco Art Institute in California. Dr. McCrae holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership, administration, and policy from Fordham University, as well as a master's in higher education from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in communications arts from Salisbury University.
