Emeritus Associate Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs
Bowling Green State University

Whereas, he is a steward of the student affairs profession affirming his passion and commitment by sharing his knowledge and supporting initiatives; and

Whereas, he currently serves as an emeritus associate professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio; and

Whereas, he previously served as associate professor of higher education and student affairs at Bowling Green State University, visiting lecturer of higher education and student affairs at Indiana University, lecturer of the Cadre and Faculty Development Course with the United States Army and University of Louisville, seventh and eighth grade language arts teacher at St. Charles Borromeo School, and chair, department of higher education and student affairs at Bowling Green State University; and

Whereas, he earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and history from Western Washington University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana University, Bloomington; and

Whereas, his professional activities and service include serving as a member of NASPA’s History Advisory Committee, liaison for preparation programs on NASPA Region IV-E Board, six-time coordinator of the NASPA Annual Conference Graduate Preparation Program Fair, committee member of the 2014 and 2017 Transatlantic Dialogues on Students, and chair of 60 doctoral dissertation committees and 16 master of arts thesis committees; and

Whereas, a sampling of his professional accolades include numerous publications and presentations; the Bowling Green State University Master Teacher award, recognition as an ACPA Diamond Honoree, the Robert H. Shaffer Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs at Indiana University, the Phillip A. Tripp Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio College Personnel Association, the NASPA IV-E Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs Through Teaching Award, and the ACPA College Student Educators International Educational Annuit Coeptis Award; and

 Whereas, his community service includes serving as president of the Bowling Green High School Band Board, a docent at the Wood County Historical Center and Museum, voting judge for the Wood County Board of Elections, chair of Pastoral Council, food pantry volunteer and member of the Right of Christian Initiation for Adults Team of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, and organizer of the Art of Beer tent at the Black Swamp Arts Festival; and

Whereas, he is a dedicated partner to Judy Gardner and proud parent of one daughter who is an university academic advisor and one son; and

Whereas, his breadth of experience is rooted in a deep commitment to the students he continues to serve as well as to the student affairs profession; and

Therefore, in recognition of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues across the Association, the NASPA Foundation Board of Directors recognizes Michael D. Coomes as a Pillar of the Profession on this 30th day of March 2020.
