Whereas, he is a steward of the student affairs profession affirming his passion and commitment by sharing his knowledge and supporting initiatives; and

Whereas, he currently serves as vice chancellor for student affairs at Rutgers University, New Brunswick inNew Brunswick, New Jersey; and

Whereas, he previously served as senior/associate vice chancellor for student affairs at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, assistant vice president/dean of students at the City University of New York, special assistant to the vice chancellor/director of strategic initiatives and planning at UNC-Chapel Hill, and associate dean for community living and multicultural affairs at Goucher College; and 

Whereas, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in student development and higher education administration from the University of Maine, and a doctorate in higher education, student affairs, and international education policy from the University of Maryland-College Park; and

Whereas, his professional activities and affiliations include serving as the inaugural co-chair of NASPA’s Latinx/a/o Knowledge Community, faculty member for NASPA’s inaugural New Professionals Institute, member of the  2017 NASPA Annual Conference Leadership Committee, editorial board member of the NASPA Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, member of the ACPA Technology Advisory Committee, member of the NASPA Multicultural Institute Conference Committee, and state director for Rhode Island NASPA; and

Whereas, a sampling of his professional accolades include numerous publications and presentations, the MLK Recognition Award from the New England Latino Student Leadership Conference, NASPA Region I Educational Equity and Ethnic Diversity Award, Community Advancement Service Award with ACPA, Faculty Service Award with Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., and NASPA Region I Rhode Island Program of the Year Award; and

Whereas, his breadth of experience is rooted in a deep commitment to the students he continues to serve as well as to the student affairs profession; and

Therefore, in recognition of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues across the Association, the NASPA Foundation Board of Directors recognizes Salvador B. Mena as a Pillar of the Profession on this 30th day of March 2020.
