Tyrone Michael Smiley has a passion for serving, mentoring and developing students. A graduate of Jacksonville State University (JSU) (Bachelor of Arts in Communications- 2009/ Master’s in Public Administration- 2012) and current doctoral student at the University of Georgia in the Higher Education/Student Affairs Leadership EdD program; he offers unique mix of personal and professional experiences which have all led him to be a student centered, goal oriented and focused higher education professional. Currently serving as the Assistant Director of University Housing at JSU, Tyrone has previous professional experience in Student Affairs as a Resident Director within the Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A member of the JSU Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Tyrone has assumed a lead role in planning educational programs, social interactions and collaborative activities that include faculty, staff, and the surrounding community for various key observances. Noticing the need and having the leadership zeal to address the underrepresentation of our African-American male students, Tyrone spearheaded the conversation and collaborated with other university personnel to create the inaugural Black Male Initiative; one that will showcase their achievements and provide mentorship and support in various areas such as finances, social interactions, career development and exploration/understanding of self. He is a member of several diverse organizations and has facilitated and participated in open forums, dialogues and programs that focused on student involvement, fraternity and sorority life, diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence.  Tyrone currently serves as the secretary for the JSU Black Alumni Chapter, Vice President of the JSU National Alumni Association, Region III co-chairman for the NASPA African American Knowledge Community and At-Large Board Member for Alabama NASPA.
