2018 State of the Union #CLDEsotu Tweet-Up
Tuesday, January 30, 2018 beginning at 8:45 p.m. Eastern

As President Trump prepares to deliver his first State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 we are excited to announce that AASCU’s American Democracy Project to engage students in a non-partisan discussion regarding the state of our democracy. 

This year, we will behaving a live Tweet-up discussion using #CLDEsotu.

Illinois State University’s Social Media Analytics Command Center (SMACC) will provide analysis of our #CLDEsotu Twitter stream as well as of public conversations from social media outlets, popular discussion forums, and major blogs.

Date: Tuesday, Jan. 30

Time: 9 p.m. ET  (We’ll start tweeting at 8:45 p.m. ET)

Channel: The speech will be carried live on all the major cable and news networks.

Livestream: on the White House YouTube channel

Where: President Trump will deliver the speech from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to a joint session of Congress

Why: Article II, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution says, the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” The speech was first called the Annual Message, then in the 1940s, the address became known as the “state of the union.” It has been known as the “State of the Union Address” since 1947.
