Stephanie Benes, NASPA IV-W Graduate Student
May 30, 2017
Name: Maggie Fischer
Hometown: Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin
Graduate Institution: University of Nebraska
Degree you are working towards: Educational Administration – Student Affairs
Previous Institutions: Iowa State University
Why you chose your graduate institution: My current supervisor, Reshell Ray, and I had a phenomenal interview together. I don’t know how to explain it other than, we just clicked! I called my mom right after the interview to tell her I was going to be going to UNL.
Why you wanted to go to graduate school: It all started with a student affairs professional at Iowa State planting the idea of a career in student affairs in my mind. I had no idea that such a thing existed! I was invited to go to an ACUI conference, and I left that weekend knowing that I wanted to work with students on a college campus.
What area(s) of Student Affairs interest you most and why: My focus is on violence prevention and sexual respect education, (consent, bystander intervention, relationship violence, etc.)
A memorable moment working with your students at your assistantship (if applicable): We had our annual Union Take Over, where we have tons of events throughout our Union. It was extremely stressful and time consuming, but my students came through, once again! After the event, we ate pizza and took group photos in the photo booth. It was just the perfect way to end a busy day.
If you could take a year off from work/school what would you do: My best friend is moving to Croatia in 32 days. So, I’d go with her!
What is your dream job?
After working in higher education for several years, my plan is to work my way up to become a state senator. I want to work to change laws and policies pertaining to sexual assault, and make sure that those impacted by sexual violence are actually protected by the law. (And obviously support education. J )
My secret passion is?
I love to sing. I was in musicals all throughout high school, and am a huge Broadway musical fan. I saw Aladdin while I was in NYC and I may or may not have cried a few times.
What you would like to be remembered for?
I’d like to be remembered as a friendly, welcoming person to everyone.
