About This Volume

In 2012, NASPA published Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Higher Education, edited by Dr. Doris Ching and Dr. Amefil Agbayani—a landmark volume that gave shape and scholarly legitimacy to the growing field of student affairs and higher education administration. This second edition does not simply update that work; it honors it as foundation while extending its labor in new directions. It is the first edition to include Canadian perspectives and to center Pacific Islander and Desi/South Asian voices with greater intentionality. We use APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi Americans) as an act of strategic anti-essentialism, while inviting contributing authors to contextualize their own use of community terminology.

The volume is organized into eight thematic sections spanning student, staff, faculty, and leadership experiences in higher education and student affairs. Some sections will open with an intergenerational conversation between scholars, and some may close with a creative or research-creation piece.

What We Are Looking For

We welcome proposals from scholars, scholar-practitioners, and practitioners at all career stages. We are especially interested in:

  • Communities underrepresented in existing literature: Pacific Islander; Southeast, Desi/South, and Indigenous Asian

  • Intersectional analyses across race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, immigration status, and disability

  • Creative, participatory, or community-engaged methodologies

  • Perspectives expanding our conceptions of American higher education, including Canadian postsecondary contexts

  • Collaborative proposals from authors whose work is in dialogue, including those wishing to place their work in conversation with a chapter from the first edition

Final chapters should be approximately 5,000-7,000 words and conclude with up to three discussion questions or provocations for practice.

  3. Institutional and Organizational Structures: Impact of federal policies (MSIs), shifting DEI landscape

  4. Student Experiences: Undergraduate/graduate experiences, student orgs, leadership

  5. Practitioner Experiences: APIDA staff; supervision, caregiving, doctoral pursuits, field transitions

  6. Faculty/Scholar and Scholar-Practitioner: Me-search, positionality, creative/artistic scholarship, interdisciplinary methods

  7. SSAOs and University Leader Experiences: Pathways to senior leadership, navigating political contexts in higher ed

  8. Professional Socialization & APIDA Leadership: Professional organizations; continuous professional development; mentorship
