Lost in Translation: The Cognitive-Verbal Gap Higher Education Overlooks

We have been in enough college classrooms– first as students, and now as emerging education professionals– to know this moment well. A professor asks a question, and a student’s face lights up with recognition. The professor can almost see the thought forming behind their student’s eyes. But when they open their mouth, what comes out is a fumbled, incomplete version of what began as a sophisticated idea. The professor moves on, the student slumps, and their peers offer only sideways glances. These reactions suggest that the professor and peers did not believe the student knew the answer. But what if they did? What if the problem was never the thought itself, but the bridge between the thought and expression? Higher education has spent decades perfecting the art of measuring what students say. It has almost no time to understand why so many of them struggle to say what they actually mean. Classrooms are full of unspoken insight and ideas trapped behind failed translations.
How Higher Education Misreads Students
Universities pride themselves on being places of deep thinking. The entire enterprise is built on the assumption that rigorous intellectual engagement produces fluent and confident communicators. This assumption holds for students who are already fluent in academic language or grew up in households where this kind of expression was modeled and rewarded. However, a significant portion of the student population, particularly first-generation college students (FGCS), international students, neurodiverse learners, and students from non-dominant cultural and linguistic backgrounds, may struggle with academic language. The gap between what they think and what they can express in the expected academic register is not always a gap in understanding, but a gap in translation.
The brain does not think in language. Cognition operates through a dense, largely non-verbal network of images, patterns, emotional associations, and sensory memory (Kroll & Bialystok, 2013). Language is recruited afterwards, as a secondary system tasked with converting internal experiences into something communicable. Expressive language is effortful under the best circumstances. Under conditions of stress, time pressure, or social anxiety– all of which are abundant in higher education settings– the process becomes significantly more challenging. When a student freezes during an oral exam, stumbles through a seminar discussion, or submits writing that reads as vague despite their evident grasp of the material, faculty often interpret this as intellectual weakness. However, this is despite the possibility that what is actually at play may be a translation system under strain.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
Higher education has not been neutral on this issue. Several systems reward verbal fluency over depth of thought. The use of evaluating students based on participation, oral presentations, in-class discussions, and timed essay exams all operate on the implicit assumption that the ability to produce language quickly and confidently is assumed to be a reliable proxy for understanding. Research suggests otherwise. Oppenheimer and Frank (2008) found that the pressure to verbalize thoughts rapidly competes with the cognitive resources needed for complex reasoning. That is, the very conditions under which we ask students to demonstrate knowledge may be suppressing the quality of the knowledge they are able to produce.
The consequences are not evenly distributed. Neurodiverse students, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism spectrum conditions, are disproportionately affected because their verbal translation processes often operate differently rather than deficiently (Prizant & Fields-Meyer, 2015). Additionally, students with anxiety conditions experience even greater impact. Generalized anxiety disorder affects nearly 1 in 6 college students globally, with a 12-month prevalence of 16.7% (Auerbach et al., 2018), making it the second most common mental health condition in higher education after depression. Anxiety does not just make students nervous in presentations or discussions; it actively competes with the cognitive resources needed to retrieve and articulate what they know (Bodie, 2010).
Multilingual students carry an additional translation burden, navigating not just the gap between thought and language but between languages themselves (Kroll & Bialystok, 2013). For FGCS, who are often unfamiliar with the specific conventions of academic discourse, the problem is cultural as much as it is cognitive. These students share a disconnect between how higher education professors interpret their translation difficulties as content deficiencies and grades them accordingly. Talented, intellectually capable students are failed, overlooked, or quietly discouraged from continuing, not because they cannot think, but because the institution has never distinguished between thinking and the performance of thinking.
Higher Education Default Responses
The dominant institutional response to facing communication challenges has been remediation. Students who struggle to express themselves are referred to writing centers, enrolled in developmental English courses, or encouraged to attend public speaking workshops. These resources are valuable, and the people who staff them do genuinely important work. However, remediation treats the cognitive-verbal gap as the student’s deficiency to be corrected rather than a systemic design problem to be addressed. It locates failure in the individual rather than in the structures that created the conditions for failure in the first place.
Meanwhile, assessment design in higher education has changed remarkably little over time. Classroom discussion, timed blue book essays, and the oral defense are not neutral measurement tools. They are instruments standardized to a particular kind of verbal performer, and they have been treated as gold standards despite waning evidence to support them. O’Neill and Padden (2022) found that diverse assessment formats allow students to demonstrate understanding through multiple modes rather than a single verbal or written performance. This produces significantly more equitable outcomes and an accurate picture of student learning. Yet the pressures of academic tradition, faculty workload, and institutional inertia keeps many programs anchored to assessment formats that systematically disadvantage a large portion of those they are meant to serve.
There is also the matter of faculty culture. In a professional environment where articulation is virtually synonymous with intellectual credibility, it is uncomfortable to admit that the gap between knowing and saying is real and that it affects students. Faculty who struggle in verbal communication contexts, for example, in impromptu department meetings, facilitating a conference Q&A session, or lecturing in a new course, tend to manage these challenges privately, rather than model their experiences openly for students. The result is a classroom culture in which verbal difficulty is experienced as shameful rather than understood as cognitively normal.
The Real Problem Is One of Design
The research suggests that the cognitive-verbal gap is not a pathology. It is a predictable feature of how human cognition works, and it is made wider or narrower depending on the conditions in which people are asked to express themselves. Anxiety, evaluation apprehension, time pressure, and unfamiliar discourse conventions reliably widen the gap (Archbell & Coplan, 2022; Kroll & Bialystok, 2013). This fear of evaluation is visceral and behavioral, as Grant (2023, p. 36) recounts how a student with genuine Japanese language knowledge avoided an oral assessment entirely by pretending to be sick, because the stakes of performing under evaluation felt unbearable. This is the cognitive-verbal gap made visible.
This suggests that resolving the cognitive-verbal gap may take several forms, including creating psychological safety in the classroom (Edmondson, 2018), providing adequate processing time, and using familiar assessment formats incorporating multiple modes of expression. These solutions do not lower standards, but provide a more sophisticated approach to measuring understanding. When an assessment is designed to capture what a student can say under pressure in a single format at a single moment in time, we are not measuring understanding. We are measuring the intersection of understanding and real-time verbal translation under evaluative stress. This distinction is important, as conflating them leads to real consequences for student success.
Five Suggestions for Higher Education
To address the cognitive-verbal gap, educators should engage in the following interventions:
Redesign assessments to separate measures for understanding and verbal performance. Offering students multiple ways to demonstrate what they know through writing completed outside of timed conditions, visual or multimodal projects, and recorded rather than live oral presentations (O’Neill & Padden, 2022) give a more accurate picture of student learning and removes some of the translation pressure that may distort performance.
Build processing time into classroom structures. Giving students more time to reflect before responding improves both the quality and equity of participation (Rowe, 1986). A sixty-second pause (e.g., for written reflection) before taking responses costs nothing and changes everything. Grant (2023) extends this logic through the flipped classroom model by separating knowledge acquisition from verbal performance. That is, studying content before class and practicing communication during it produced stronger outcomes over time. The principle is the same, students do not need to feel ready before they speak. Comfort with verbal expression grows through practice, not before it.
Train faculty to recognize the gap. Faculty development focused on distinguishing between students who do not understand material and students whose translation systems are under strain would change the way faculty assess classroom performance, office hours conversations, and written work. This approach offers cognitive literacy for educators, acknowledging the cognitive-verbal gap many students face.
Create low-stakes spaces for translation practice. Exercises which include informal writing, ungraded discussion posts, think-pair-share activities, and other low-pressure verbal exercises (White et al., 2011) give students repeated opportunities to practice moving from thought to language without the weight of evaluation distorting the process. This may build skills to reduce the cognitive-verbal gap.
Make the gap visible and normal. When faculty name this phenomenon in their classrooms by saying out loud that knowing something and being able to express it immediately are two different cognitive tasks, it allows students to recognize a process that often goes unnoticed. For many students, this could be the first time students– who may have silently struggled with the cognitive-verbal gap their entire academic lives– are validated. The difficulty is real and not a reflection of students’ intelligence.
Conclusion
Higher education institutions espouse values of access, investing in financial aid, recruitment pipelines, and diversity initiatives designed to bring more students through their doors. But access into a building is not the same as access to intellectual life within an institution. When we design our classrooms, assessments, and cultures in ways that systematically privilege one mode of cognitive expression over others, we close a door that admissions offices worked hard to open. The students sitting in our classrooms are thinking. Many of them are thinking in ways that would genuinely surprise and impress us if we gave those thoughts a fair shot. The cognitive-verbal gap is not students’ problem to solve alone. It is ours to understand and accommodate.
