KC Spotlight - Veterans

October 27, 2016 Crisann Hanes Colorado State University

This month brings us Veteran’s Day. As higher educators we know the numbers of student veterans and military-connected students continues to rise. We see it every day on our campuses. As serving and supporting military-connected students continues to be an important focus area, Veteran’s Day is a great opportunity to recognize and honor the veterans on our campuses.

Veteran’s Day is celebrated on the 11th day of the 11 month in honor of the armistice that ended World War I hostilities seven months before the official end of the war when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. In 1919 President Wilson declared November 11 the first official Armistice Day in the United States, and in 1938 the Act was amended to replace “Armistice” with “Veterans,” making November 11th a day to honor veterans of all generations.

On many campuses, Veteran’s Day is an important day to honor and recognize student veterans, as well as faculty and staff who have served. Some campuses have organized events or activities to commemorate Veteran’s Day, or to recognize the student veterans on their campuses. One event, the National Remembrance Day Roll Call, is a nation-wide initiative of Eastern Kentucky University. The “Roll Call,” includes college campuses across the country who pledge to recognize service members who have lost their lives since 9/11. For more information on the National Remembrance Day Roll Call please visit the NASPA VKC website.

The Veteran’s Knowledge Community is also soliciting nominations for the next VKC Chair, or Co-Chairs-Elect. All interested members of the VKC are encouraged to apply! A detailed description of the Chair, or Co-Chair, responsibilities can be found on the NASPA website. The deadline for nominations is November 8, 2016.

Also, don’t forget about the 2017 NASPA Symposium on Military Connected Students! This year’s Symposium promises to be a great event. We hope you’ll join us in Washington, D.C. from February 9 –11! To learn more about the Symposium on Military Connected Students, or to register, please visit the NASPA VKC website
