2019 NASPA Region IV-West Conference

Regional Conference Student Success

The NASPA Region IV-W Conference Committee invites you to join us in FARGO, ND! The 2019 NASPA IV-W Conference is a three-day gathering of student affairs professionals who come together to reflect, learn, network, and be inspired. This year’s conference theme is "Forward Thinking and Forward Leading". The 2019 Region IV-West Conference will allow us time to come together to think about – AND CREATE - the future of our profession. Having just concluded the yearlong celebration of NASPA’s 100th Anniversary, we will now look to the future and consider what the next 5-10 or even 100 years might look like for higher education, student affairs, and student life.

Land Ackknowledgement

Do you know where you are? is a question that further grounds the theme of the Annual Conference. In relation to land acknowledgements, Do you know where you are? asks us to consider the ways in which Native Nations maintain linguistic, cultural, and political continuity with locales and how, from time immemorial, their economies and educational systems have depended on access to lands and waters. The relevance of this understanding to the profession is that these economies and educational systems have been colonized by the same non-Native colleges and universities that Native students seek an education. This is to say, we live, learn, and work in locations that serve as the original contexts of learning for Native peoples. With all this in mind, the conference committee would like to acknowledge the five tribal nations currently inhabiting the lands of North Dakota: the Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nations (Three Affiliated Tribes), the Spirit Lake Nation, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Nation. Additionally, we want to recognize the Dakota or Lakota Nation (also called “Sioux”), Three Affiliated Tribes, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Chippewa (or Ojibwe), Cree, Blackfeet, and Crow, who possessed pre-colonial ties to the state of North Dakota.
