Staying Informed: Why Public Policy Matters in Student Affairs
April 9, 2026
In student affairs, change is constant — but not all change makes headlines. Public policy is always evolving, even when it isn’t dominating the news cycle. Presidential transitions often bring highly visible and abrupt policy shifts, while later years in an administration tend to usher in more incremental, technical, and sometimes less publicized changes. Yet subtle does not mean insignificant. For student affairs professionals, it is essential to remain informed about public policy even when it feels distant from our daily responsibilities.
Staying up to date with public policy provides context — context for institutional decisions, for shifts in strategic priorities, and for changes that may directly affect our roles. When you understand the policies impacting higher education at the state or federal level, you are better positioned to anticipate institutional responses. For example, when Ohio’s SB 1 affected DEI programs at institutions receiving state funding, student affairs professionals who were already tracking the legislation were able to anticipate conversations, prepare for structural changes, and think proactively about how to continue supporting students within new parameters. Policy awareness allows us to move from reactive to responsive.
Beyond understanding what may impact your own work, policy literacy helps you understand what may impact your students. Financial aid regulations, Title IX guidance, funding allocations, visa policies, campus safety laws, and state-level mandates all shape the lived experiences of the students we serve. Our students are often navigating the consequences of these policies in real time. When we are informed, we are better advocates, better advisors, and better educators. We can contextualize institutional decisions for students, offer accurate information, and provide steady leadership during moments of uncertainty.
The good news is that staying informed does not have to be overwhelming. There are accessible tools designed specifically for higher education professionals. One such resource is the NASPA Public Policy Hub (PPH), which allows you to track legislation and policy updates that affect higher education. Through the Hub, you can monitor policies in your specific state or region and access curated resources relevant to student affairs. Subscribing to biweekly policy updates provides a manageable way to stay informed; each update includes direct links to resources within the Hub. Access is simple — just log in using your NASPA membership credentials to explore the available materials and tracking tools.
If you are unsure where to begin, you are not alone. Policy conversations can feel complex, technical, or intimidating. That is why the WISA Public Policy co-chairs are hosting a virtual conversation focused on finding and using policy resources, discussing current policies impacting higher education, and answering your questions. There is no preparation required and no pressure to be an expert — just a supportive space to learn together. Join us on Tuesday, April 21st from 12–1 p.m. EST to build your confidence and community around public policy engagement.
