Fundraising for Diversity

Supporting the Profession Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Division
Tierney Bates Virginia Union University

This is for Cultural Centers, Multicultural Affairs, Development Officers or individuals who work in the realm of student diversity. On most campuses we are often faced with small budgets, lack of financial support, institutional commitment, and decreases in resources. Hear personally from a presenter who has worked directly in Multicultural Affairs and University Development to increase your bottom line.

Higher education is facing times of financial crisis and affordability along with decreasing state support. Today’s institutions are often faced with shrinking budgets and decreased resources. There is a shift to cultivate and look for funding through research, partnerships, corporations, and alumni. We have seen institutions complete billion dollar campaigns over the last 10yrs approximately 72 in the country.

The work we do in multicultural student life or diversity offices is very vital to the institution, community, and student body. In this era of higher education we need to look at how you can create different and new funding models to offset your budget, increase your exposure and have buy in from multiple partnerships and collaborations to help build the work you do, impact students, work with university development and create external support.

The presenter will report on terminology, planning, research, and implementation of funding models. The audience will learn about collaborative partnerships, organizational barriers, and looking beyond traditional programming resources. While most diversity officers or offices face obstacles, innovative thinking is often equally challenging when talking about this subject for members in our profession. A discussion between the presenter and audience members related to the content and outcomes will be to teach development practices, to apply concepts based on institutional size, and developing a return on investment for your student base and programs.
