Supporting the New Student Experience through Intentional Transition Collaborations

Student Success Orientation, Transition and Retention
Nicole Kotlan, Ph.D. Kent State University

In 2014, Salomonson & Ward-Roof identified that the transition to college is not accomplished by a single event – orientation is not a “one-and-done” enterprise. Instead, institutions must strategically integrate orientation and transition experiences to increase student persistence. This session will discuss the movement of “transition” within the orientation, transition & retention field while articulating the role of cross-campus collaborations leading to student success.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in this live briefing, participants will be able to:

  • define “transition” using the 2012 definition provided by NODA: The Association for Orientation, Transition & Retention in Higher Education;
  • articulate the benefits of intentional transitional programs on their campuses; and
  • identify 1 new campus partner or 1 existing campus partner with whom to better collaborate to design an intentional high-impact transition experience.
